Week 34 brings us to 1994!
Starting this week I am not going to mention each movie I turned down. The Disney yearly list I use at this point combines straight to video and theatrical releases, that makes the list pretty long. So at this point I will just list movies I considered.
There was only two movies that interested me this week and they were:
The Lion King
and
Iron Will
Now I am going to be blasted for this, I am not a huge fan of the Lion King. Love the mix of hand drawn animation combined with computer animation in the movie. It looks great. Wonderful toe taping music. I love the Lion King show at the Animal Kingdom. I am just not a big fan of the story. Not many likable characters. In fact a lot of annoying characters including Simba. Also, I don't know about you but I hope My Circle Of Life does not include getting killed by a family member.
To be fair I thought I would give it a fresh look. I put it in my Netflix Queue, it said long wait. So I put Iron Will in the queue, it also had a long wait. So I figured I would let fate take over. What ever comes first is what it will be. The winner was Iron Will.

I never watched Iron Will before but the description of the movie sounded exciting. The film takes place in 1917, it follows a boy who, after his father dies (it would not be a Disney movie without a parent dying), takes part in a cross country dog sled race from Canada to Minnesota, 500 miles, to win money to save his farm and get money for school.
The boy is named Will (Iron Will), played by Mackenzie Astin. He is perfect in the part very believable (In fact during the movie you will want to offer him some Blistex). Will fights the weather, wolves, and of course there are bad guys racing against him, looking sinister. It is an exciting movie, maybe a bit to long. They probably could have chopped about 15 minutes out of it.
The movie has some star power in it. Kevin Spacey, plays Harry Kingsley a reporter following the race who supports Will. Brian in another bad guy role, plays Angus McTeague, who is upset that Will is getting in the way of his winnings. David Ogden Stiers as J.W. Harper the man who puts up the winnings for the race. The race is hard to follow so these three characters kind of gives us the explanation of what is going on in the race.
It is a very exciting family movie. Probably for ages eight and up. The funny thing I thought of as I was watching this is, Mackenzie"s brother Sean is well known from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and as Rudy in Rudy. This movie is Rudy on a dog sled. So if you liked Rudy..you will like this I imagine.
Fun and not so fun facts:
Mackenzies brother as mentioned is Sean, but also his dad is John, known from the Adams Family. His mom is Patty Duke. He is not as well known as his brother but he is still a working actor with 5 films scheduled to be released in some form in the next year or so.
The movie is roughly based on a 1917 Winnipeg-to-St. Paul dog-sled race, sponsored by the Great Northern Railway. Will, is based on two real-life participants : Albert Campbell, the winner. He was a mixed-blood Cree trapper from Manitoba who was harassed by his racist white competitors throughout the race; and Fred Hartman, the only American participant, who was touted as a hero during the race by American newspapers, but had to drop out when his sled dogs fought among themselves and his lead dog was killed.
Well Iron Will is an exciting family film that could use a little editing but other than that it was better than I thought it was going to be. I would give it 3 1/2 Mickeys out of 5. Good family entertainment.

Next week will be a tough choice between two popular movies.
So to next week.
For those in Florida and the Gulf area my thoughts are with you, be safe.
Thanks for your time.
