Week 27 is 1987.
I turned down:
The Brave Little Toaster
and
Benji The Hunted
They were the only two options from Disney so I went with Touchstone this week.
An 80's Touchstone classic...Adventures In Babystitting.
Now I have not seen this in many years I remembered I loved it and people who loved it still remember the lines: "No one gets out of here without singing the Blues" and "Don't F with the babysitter".
For those who do not know the story, Chris agrees to baby-sit for the Andersons after her boyfriend stands her up. Chris takes the kids along with her to downtown Chicago to pick up her friend Brenda, but one flat tire leads to an all night adventure.
Well does it hold up? The outfits are very 80's, and kids today will be thinking "why not use the cell".What makes the movie work still is the casting (we will get to that later) and the director Christopher Columbus, amazingly his first time in the chair. I remember the first time I watched this I thought, who is that girl, she is a star. Watching it again, Elisabeth Shue just pops from the screen, almost attacks it, with the opening dance in her bedroom with The Crystals- Then he kissed me playing, followed by the babysitting blues and the gang fight. She is the movie and makes the movie work.
Surprisingly I did not find the movie great like I did before (still wonderful). It gets a little long and slopppy at the end with a kid hanging from a building, goofy things like that which did not seem to be needed and maybe left on the floor of the editing room.
Very important, this is not a kids movie, and it is funny I did not remember this. F bombs. Adultery, kids drinking, Playboy magazine plays a big part (but no nudity), guns, if you have never seen this film you will have to judge your kids maturity level.

Now casting:
Director Chris Columbus- went on to produce and direct many movies including a couple Harry Potter films.
Elisabeth Shue- went on to star in many movies including an Oscar Nom for Leaving las Vegas. She now stars in CSI.
Keith Coogan (Brad)- still has a career in bit parts on TV shows
Anthony Rapp (Daryl)- You know him as a big stage star, the original Rent and the movie version.
Penelope Ann Miller (Brenda)- In many movies but we just saw her in the Oscar winner The Artist.
Vincent D'Onofrio (Thor)-many years on Law And Order Criminal Intent.
George Newbern (Dan)-You know him from Father Of The Bride 1 and 2.
Bradley Whitford (Mike)- seven years of The West Wing.
Maia Brewton (Sara)-Three years of Parker lewis Can't Lose, It looks like she quit acting in 2002
So as you see the cast went on to be pretty succesful.

Fun and not so fun facts:
The movie cost 3 million to make, it made 34 million
Andrew Shue (Melrose Place), Elisabeth's brother, if you look hard enough can be seen at the bar in the frat house.
Southside Johnny is singing in the frat house.
Valerie Bertinelli, Michelle Pfeiffer,Tatum O'Neal, Melanie Griffith, all wanted or turned down the part of Chris.
Chris passed out in the hospital scene and woke up and said "I had the worst nightmare". Elisabeth said the same line after passing out in Back To The Future 3.
This was a great year for Disney, Touchstone had Good Morning Vietnam; Outrageus Fortune; Can't Buy Me Love; Three Men And A Baby; Stakeout; and Tin Men. Touchstone had become a success.
I would give Adventures 4 Mickeys out of 5. Thinking 4 1/2 but I think 4 Mickeys feel better. A little bit dated and a little sloppy at the end still a wonderful fun film. Comes out on Blu Ray in August.

That was long, thanks for your time as always
And remember..no one gets out of here without singing the blues. I got the babysitting blues.

Why would you turn down The Brave Little Toaster? Such an epic movie! Great post!

I know, I was not brave enough to go with The Brave little Toaster. Which means a toaster is braver than me. Now I need therapy to get past this.

Thanks for enjoying my review.
