Week 26 brings us to 1986

I turned down:
The Flight Of The Navigator

I went with an animated film that came out this year that a lot of people think is a hidden gem.

The Great Mouse Detective or Basil: The Great Mouse Detective.

The movie starts with a young mouse named Olivia who needs help from Basil(Bartholomew), a detective because her father was kidnapped. Later finding out he was kidanpped by Basil's archenemy Professor Ratigan. He has a diabolical plan for England.

The voices were spot on:
Vincent Price
Barrie Ingham
Val Bettin
Susanne Pollatscheck

The story I thought was just so-so involving kidnapping a toymaker. It was kind of slow but the movie came in at 1 hour and 15 minutes so that helped. It is a Sherlock Holmes movie with a mouse. Just like a Holmes book he slowly deciphers the mystery.

There is not much laughter here, some suspense with a very good bad guy (or rat). What helps is the animation. It is fantastic. Captures London very well. Creative. And..what a last scene in the clocktower, it looks fantastic. The movie may be worth taking a look just for that. I know there is a lot of love out there for this movie. I just did not feel it that much, still I enjoyed it.

Fact or not so fun facts:

Based on the book Basil Of Bakers Street by Eve Titus
The movie did fairly well making almost 39 million with a budget of 14 million.
Many Disney animators say that the animation in this movie set the stage for the renaissance of Disney animation.

So it is worth a look on DVD (in September it comes out in Blu-Ray). I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 Mickeys. A good looking film. It may even introduce your children to Sherlock Holmes.

So this is the half way mark. Here are the top rated movies I reviewed so far:
1961 101 Dalmations
1967 The Jungle Book
1975 The Apple Dumpling Gang
1977 The Rescuers
1982 Night Crossing
1985 The Journey Of Natty Gann
Put any of these or all in your queue you will not be disappointed.

The worst:
1978 Hot Lead And Cold Feet

Well I wish you and your family a relaxing and fun holiday week.

Thanks again for your time
