Week 23 is here. 1983!
Only three options for the year, two of them are not available.
They are:
Tiger Town
Trenchcoat
That left me with Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Now before the review. I watched this on Tuesday. The next day I learned Ray Bradbury had died. Freaked me out a bit.
Some wonderful acting jobs in this film:
Jason Robards as Charles Halloway the town Librarian is fantastic.
Jonathan Pryce as Mr Dark is....dark
Vidal Peterson And Shawn Carson as the two boys, Will and Jim, who discover the carnival's secrets are very talented.
The story sets up in a small town, where over night a carnival arrives. With the carnival comes Mr Dark. Mr Dark offers the towns people their fondest wishes, unknowingly for their souls (yes it does sound like Steven King's Needful Things a little bit). Will, Jim, and Charles try to save the town.
The movie seems to fight itself a bit. I understand it can not be as dark as the book; it is a Disney Movie. However because of that, "evil" seems to be full onslaught of evil. Just quick visions in a mirror or flashes of scarey things. It ends up being wacky at the end a bit, with some confusion.
At the same time I am not putting down the movie as being bad. It has very good performances and the story is exciting. It just feels good and just missing very good. As stated before, I think it is just a very dark book that is struggling to be a Disney movie.
A couple interesting or not so interesting notes:
The two boys-
Vidal Peterson who played Will. He did mostly TV shows and TV movies. He was DTan in StarTrek The Next Generation. He was Rugal in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. His last acting job was in 1993.
Shawn Carson who played Jim.This was his last acting job. Which surprised me a bit.
Well, Something Wicked This Way Comes, is not for kids under 10, maybe not 12. I would give the movie 3 out of 5 Mickeys. Thinking 2 and a half because it is just middle of the road, but the performances lifts it up another half a Mickey.
Well when I started this I said I would also add in Touchstone and Pixar when the opportunity arrives. Well next week Touchstone arrives! Just in time!
I will finish this with lift of a glass to Ray Bradbury, a brilliant writer.
Have a peaceful week everyone!
As always, thanks for taking the time.
