The 80's have arrived!!!!
The movies I turned down for 1980 are:
Herbie Goes Bananas
Popeye
Midnight Madness
Watcher in The Woods
I settled on: The Last Flight Of Noah's Ark.
I have never seen this movie, and the plot interested me a bit. The film follows Noah Dugan (Elliot Gould) a pilot who owes money to some gamblers. He takes a quick job to get out of town, flying Bernadette Lafleur (Geneviève Bujold) a missionary and her cargo of farm animals to a remote location. The plane, a B-29, crash-lands on a deserted island. With them are some orphan stowaways Bobby (Ricky Schroder) and Julie (Tammy Lauren). Not giving to much away by saying that they come up with the idea to turn the plane into a boat. After reading the description I thought it could be a little more like a modern Swiss family Robinson. No. It really was not that interesting. Nothing really exciting happens on the island. They do meet two Japanese men who were still fighting the war(they did not get the text message). The two men were more interesting than anybody else in the movie. A lot went wrong in this movie I made a list of the problems:
1-Gould was miscast, he had no chemistry with Genevieve. I also got the feeling he picked up the paycheck and mailed it in.
2-The three screenwriters, yes three, decided not to develop the characters and just push the story.
3-The music is dreaaaaadful. Maybe the worst Disney music ever in a movie.
4-The ending.... ok... picture Castaway with Tom Hanks, he gets picked up by the ship and the movie just ends. We know nothing about what happens to him afterwards. This is what happened here (sorry if I give away an ending but it is Disney, they are not going to kill everybody). That goes back to the lack of development of characters, they did not even give us a result.
The movie is a good idea, it just was flat. Yes these are tough times for the Disney Studio.
Fun and not so fun facts
Geneviève Bujold a wonderful actress who starred in over 30 movies. Including movies with Katherine Hepburn, Charlton Heston, and Clint Eastwood.
Tammy Lauren, became a TV actress, she is known for playing Maggie Sullivan in The Young And The Restless.
This was Ricky Schroder's 2nd movie, the first was The Champ. Two years after this movie he starred in Silver Spoons.
Well I had a little hope for this movie, just by the premise. Sad.
I was prepared to give it 2 1/2 thinking it is a harmless family move (and it is). However the ending dropped it a notch. I give it 2 Mickeys out of 5.
Have a peaceful week everyone.
