Week 19 is here with 1979.

I turned down:
Unidentified Flying Oddball
The Black Hole
The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again

I went with the North Avenue Irregulars. The movie is filled with a lot of stars from the 70's. I will just list them and get it out of the way:
Edward Hermann
Barara Harris
Karen Valentine
Cloris Leachman
Ruth Buzzi
Susan Clark

Michael Hill is a new minister in the Presbyterian church of a small town. he decides to speak out against illegal gambling that is taking place in the town. He gets help from six female followers of the church. Thus begins the hijinx.

Like last week it is a pretty good premise. However again it goes back to the writing. The movie is directed by Bruce Bilson. Written by Don Tait. Based on the book by Albert Fay Hill. It is better than last week. It just, again, has a premise, and cannot hold it, or does not know what to do with it. There are some funny moments involving ladies being crime fighters who are not crime fighters. Those funny moments are few and far between. There is a lot of chasing. I mean a lot of chasing. It almost seemed as filler for the writers. It almost comes across as a sitcom. It may have worked as a sitcom, in short 20 minute stories. The ladies could be involved in the town watch, and solve something every week while being moms and being involved in the church. Here it misses. Just not enough good material. Sad.

Fun or not so fun facts this week:
I just wanted to highlight on Virginia Capers who played Cleo. She is pretty good in this movie in a very small role and kind of stole the movie.
She is interesting because she won a Tony for the musical "Raisin" based on Raisin In The Sun. She studied voice at Julliard.
She and her son Glenn once took in a runaway named Nilak Butler and eventually helped her secure a five-year contract with Warner Brothers as an actress. Nilak later became a prominent voice in the American Indian Movement.
Sadly passed away in 2004. So we tip our hat to Virginia Capers this week.

Well back to the movie. A Disney movie with kids in it for like 5-10 minutes, which is a little odd. I do not think children will get the jokes in this one. Adults will get tired of the car chasing after an hour I imagine. I will give it 2 Mickeys out of 5. Again sad, because i like the idea.

A quick note on the Avengers.
I went to see it Wednesday (5 people in the theatre!) in 3D. I went knowing the critics loved it and the Cinema score leaving the theatres over the weekend was an A. So when you go in hearing all that I was thinking it is not going to live up to the hype I am hearing. The movie was pretty good.
Plus: They took awhile for developement of characters. Which helps you care.
Good writing. Funny but not over the top.

Negative: A little long. Fight scenes went forever (however looked great).
Save the money on 3D, it does not add much.

Thumbs up to Mark Ruffalo, so quiet, and wonderful as Banner.
4 out of 5 Mickeys (almost 4 1/2 I am still waffeling). Kids may find the first hour slow.
Stay through the credits. Something after the first batch. Then something kinda stupid and funny after the scroll. A long 8 minute wait though.
Have a good week.
Happy Mothers day to the moms.
