Well, yesterday we made a surprise trip to the Happiest Place on Earth! :) So I thought I'd drop you all a line on what's going on there.

In DLP, the following attractions were closed:
Peter Pan's Flight
Space Mountain (duh)
Sleeping Beauty Castle Dioramas (permanently, from the looks of it)

In DCA, the following attractions were closed:
Superstar Limo (STILL!!!!!!)

One interesting thing of note - there was a wall up by the lagoon where the submarines used to be! We walked around by the Matterhorn and tried to peak behind it, but all we really saw were folded up work lights. Maybe they are doing something to it finally???

Both parks closed early (DCA at 6pm, and DLP at 8pm). We didn't get up there until around 1. Though the crowds were fairly large (1 hour wait stand by for Splash Mountain), The TOT only had a 15 minute wait! :sohappy: so that was the first thing we hit up. We then got fast passes for Soarin' and headed to DLP. We waited 25 minutes for Indian Jones. We found that the Stand By signs were dead on when it came to wait times today. Summer has definately started here in Disneyland by the crowds! Strollers, strollers everywhere.

Yes Kristen, we did see Aladdin and Jasmine greeting folks outside the Oasis! :)

We ate lunch at Tortilla Joe's Cantina. We split a couple of EXCELLENT appetizers (Chicken and beef tamales, and chicken taquitos). My DH (dear husband) had a margarita. All of it was great and I highly recommend the place! Thier sauces are amazing! The AP discount here is for a free dessert with 2 entrees, but the appetizers were enough for us. The tamales (especially the chicken on) were AMAZING! I have a new favorite Mexican restruant (which says a lot, living in Escondido, there are more mexican joints than any other kind in town!).

We went on Pirates with less than a 10 minute wait, and the same for the Haunted Mansion. Some terribly rude kids were beating on each other's cars and throwing change at each other. "God" - aka , the voice over the speaker, had to tell them to behave like 4 times... morons....

We headed back and used our fastpasses for Soarin'. The fast passed turned into just "not as slow passes". It still took about 20 minutes for us to make it onto the ride.

We headed back to Disneyland and grabbed a brownie at the bakery. They are HUGE so we split it. We pretty much walked on the Carosel (a tradition that makes me feel all warm and smooshy, since that was the first ride my DH and I went on after he proposed - on one knee, with the ring and all, in Snow White's grotto, after the fireworks on 9/29/00 - At least, it was the first ride we went on after about an hour of crying and hugging each other! LOL) and Snow White's Scary Adventure. Since Peter Pan was down, the line for Dumbo was HUGE!

We had to sit down so my DH could make a call into his work, so we picked a bench between Big Thunder and Fantasyland. While we were sitting there, a huge herd of goats and a cow walked by, led by cast members. It surprised me! Then, when we were walking, we discovered a little farm-like display near the Festival Arena themed for "Home on the Range"! It was already closed, so we had to peek over the gate to see it. We saw the movie (and I have to admit, it is the ONLY disney animated movie I was nearly completely disappointed in - Lucky saved it for me) and were glad to see some promotion for it.

Big Thunder boasted a line upwards of 35 minutes, so we skipped it and decided to finally go "grocery shopping" and head home. Every time we go up, we get a couple boxes of Mickeyroni and Cheese. It's the BEST mac n' cheese on the market (and a good cheap souvenier at only $3 a box). We also grabbed a bag of taffy for $2.50. The big splurge was on Brother Bear on DVD.

Getting the munchies again, we headed to the Uva Bar in Downtown Disney for dessert. We split the sorbets and apple galetto. Both were GREAT! Add a bottle of Sole to that (sparkleing water) and we ended up spending about $20 on dessert.

With that done, we headed home! :)

I bet they are just cleaning up the Lagoon

There were things like 3D glasses in the water and toys and Cups ect....
I dont think they will be putting anything in .

Yay for seeing Al! :sohappy: Was he a cute one? ;)

Had I known about the sub wall, I would have gotten a pic for ya today! However, by the time I got into TL, i was so intent on getting to the DDR machine (read: Kirsten's $1/game crack supply) that I didn't even notice!! ;)

And I have not once seen that Ranch open. :p

Sub wall

Maybe it was just for cleaning - maybe not! No idea here! It looked really clean to me. Maybe they are just removing the old audioanimatronics before they get all rusty (if they aren't already!)

It sounds like DL was fairly crowded, but DCA was pretty dead. Is that correct? I've read that ToT has not helped boost attendance at DCA like they had hoped. Can anyone confirm this? I really had high hopes that this new ToT would be even better than the original, but most of what I've read seem to indicate that it's a really scaled back version. Bummer! I'll still ride it though to decide for myself.

Unfortunately, no, it hasn't. I was there today, and it was only a 35 min wait. On a weekday, it's not uncommon to walk right on. it certainly doesn't seem to be attracting people.

That's because, like Soarin', it is kind of lame as a thrill ride. Disney forgets that Southern Californians are used to much more intense thrills than those two rides. There are basically two mindsets when visiting a theme park: Either you want intense thrills (like X, Ghostrider, etc), or you want excellent themeing (like Haunted Mansion, Pirates, etc). Because they cut corners so much on the themeing for ToT, they've alienated the audience that cares most about that. So they should have made up for it by making the ride super intense and gone after that crowd. Instead, they tried to "please everyone" while also being cheap and now it's coming back to haunt them. I look forward to the day when Disney gets a clue about what the public really wants.

Is it worth experiencing it? How does it compare to the WDW version (which is my all time favorite Disney attraction)?

I just rode DCA's Tower on Thursday, and I say that it is well worth experiencing. Despite the lack of the 5th Dimension, it is a very solid ride and is still very well done.

WDW beats DCA with its gardens and ride profiles (though I'm sure the randomization is in DCA's future), while DCA beats WDW with its libraries (I LOVED the storm going on outside the window as you enter), boiler room (I wish they'd cut back on the colored lighting, but the room itself is huge and impressive), and sound/lighting effects during the drop portion of the ride.

The missing 5th Diminsion is not that big of a loss, as the vehicle still moves backward and forward for loading and unloading, with effects along the way. Not to mention the new mirror scene.

Overall, it's a great ride, but I think I'll always be a bit partial to the original. Our "atmosphere" is helped quite a bit by the queue gardens.

Well, that is a tricky question in my opinion. The rides are very comparable and based on that - the new ToT is wonderful.

But at Chapps pointed out, they cut back on the themeing and that takes away from the experience. The inside of the hotel is nice and the basement/broiler room is well done - but the outside leaves a lot to be desired.

So - yes - it is worth the time to ride it, it is a fun ride. I just wish they didn't do it on the cheap as far as themeing goes.

IMHO, yes, it is worth experiencing. After going on Florida's version many, many times durinig my College Program, this one threw me for a loop. I enjoyed the ride itself just as much as I did in Florida. As others have said, the queue is a bit lacking, though.

You keep writing DLP! Anyway, great trip report! Suprisingly, I'm not the least disappointed about DCA's attendance not improving! Maybe Disney would learn their lesson once and for all! Cutting corners in the theme park industry shows!

I hope the mummy ride KILLS attendance for DCA! (runs for cover)

LOL - I understand why you want to run for cover, but to a certain extent I agree. Maybe - finally - they will get it through their heads that we don't want rides, we want well themed Disney magical rides like we used to get in the past.

ToT has helped distribute crowds a little bit better. Unforunately, I can spend a week in WDW for the price of 1 weekend in DLR, so it's a tough sell to some folks.

Overall consumption is down. My hubby works at 2 large malls in the southeren california area (El Camino Real and North County Fair) - and today, on Memorial day, when there are usually tons of people, they closed early becuase they had no one in thier store....

I think Disney is just reaping what is going around. I mean, I know I can't afford my weeklong vacation to Disneyworld this year! With gas at $2.38 in my area (and that's the cheap stuff) - I can barely get up to DL as often as I like!

I had a chance to go out to DL last weekend on Saturday and Sunday. We rode ToT on Saturday and it was at most a 45 min. wait, but on Sunday we went back to check it out and it was at 165 with no fast passes. I guess you're talking weekdays there, but that had to be one of the longest wait times I've seen for any ride.

Really? LMAO... the longest I've EVER seen the listed wait was like 45 min. I usually go any day but Saturdays. And even this past weekend, I went on Saturday and practically walked right into the library, even just after Aladdin dumped. I didn't go into that area on Sunday, I justs stayed in the Hyperion. :p

ToT this past Sunday was a mess. I heard (but didn't bother trying to confirm) that they were down to 1 wroking shaft, so capacity was cut by 66%. In addition, it was a holiday weekend so that would have added some to it as well.

When a ride is messed up like that they will shut down the FP machines.
