I wonder how large a max settings RAW image file would be? I am thinking it would have to be in the 40-60 gig range.

50mb... I am extremely disappointed with this camera

Yeah..this camera kind of let me down as well. I as 100% on board on getting it when I first heard the rumors (been saving up and everything), and now I'm not so sure. Two different models too are a bit of a let down as well.

Side note: It also makes me a bit angry that they are already releasing a D3200..the D3100 came out not too long ago...and was one of their best selling DSLRs..and still is. I own one and feel a bit ripped off that its already getting replaced.

Nikon seem to be churning out the models recently. Canon on the other hand seem to be napping.

I was as well... what kills me are the following:

1.) 36.3 MP is massive, I always shoot RAW so I would need to invest in some more storage on my machine. Server grade HD's aren't that expensive, but I have been holding off.
2.) 4 FPS... not that I pray and spray or motordrive, but this is a bit of a let down... again, related to the 36MP sensor. Now this limits photographers to use at weddings, special events, and studio work. Anyone looking to go full frame and have more versatility (say, you wanted to try and start to break into sports photography) good luck. It is too slow at 4fps.
3.) I was looking forward to this being a baby D4, rather it is a baby D3x. I don't print large scale very often so again, the resolution is overkill.
4.) CF / SD combo is strange for a pro body. CF's are pricy but have much better performance, I'd rather see 2 CF's in there. Or, one CF and a new XQD (I think thats what the new system is called) like in the D4.

Agreed. It looks like way too much was sacrificed to get 36 megapixels.

3K price tag isn't that bad, I saw projected figured of 4200 plus. So it was nice to see the analysts fail with this figure.

Also disappointed in this. I was hoping for a D3s "light," essentially, and this is not it. I'd rather have a 12-16mp camera, better high ISO performance, and faster FPS, among other things.

I was really hoping we were done playing the megapixel game. Sadly, it doesn't look like we are yet.

Guess I just keep saving my pennies for a D3s.

Just and update..the Raw file size falls in at around 75mb per image. Ouch!

The 4fps shooting is VERY disappointing (EVERY type of photography pretty much needs a fast shooting mode..not just sports).

The only good thing about this camera is that once its out, prices on used D700's (and even D3s) are going to drop. May be a good time to pick up an old model full frame :)

Yeah the 4fps is not good enough. Those RAWs a BIG!

looks like the pennies will continue to mount, I'd rather a used D3s than a new D800.

Problem with the D800 is the other increase in costs you'll have for larger cards / hard drives and processing those images is going to make the most of all your RAM.

I still wish there was a camera between the D4 / D3s and D700 as there is a gap there, in terms of price more than anything else.

I've currently got a D300 and next step up will have to be the D4 as it looks like Nikon have already discontinued the D3s, I believe in part to the widespread flooding at their factories at the end of last year.

I think from the specs on the camera, it was intended to capture the indie film market more than anything else... I am very tempted to get it, but am now hearing that the Sony Alpha full frame that will soon be announce is using the same sensor, but will have the mirrorless body and much faster frame rate... considering I have nearly equal number of Minolta and Nikon lenses... I'm a little torn as I suspect Sony will put their camera out with a much lower price to try and steal market share.

while I completely agree with you since you seem to be following the tried and true (up a model and a generation) there is simply a massive financial difference.

6K for the D4 is a tough one to swallow if you aren't making a great living from your camera. I am a wedding photographer and I have the found there is not enough difference in ISO capability between the D7000 and the D700 to justify spending 1500 extra just for a full frame sensor.

Yeah, you're right, there isnt enough of a difference between those two models. Between the D300 and D3S there is though, a big difference. Got the D300 3 years ago, but doing more now and it would be ideal to have two bodies, especially with one for high ISO capabilities.

Oh not doubt, I'll never deny that. I hope to see prices fall for the D3s but I have a feeling they won't. It seems the D4 was a massive improvement in terms of video production, maybe not as much as a jump in still image work. So I have a feeling that keep prices steady for left over D3s's and used models... which sucks.

two bodies is completely necessary if you're doing paid work... I used to miss shots if I was switching lenses, which I'd like to avoid.
