Quite a few pixels to play around with there!

I wonder how large a max settings RAW image file would be? I am thinking it would have to be in the 40-60 gig range.
50mb... I am extremely disappointed with this camera
Agreed. It looks like way too much was sacrificed to get 36 megapixels.50mb... I am extremely disappointed with this camera
Yeah..this camera kind of let me down as well. I as 100% on board on getting it when I first heard the rumors (been saving up and everything), and now I'm not so sure. Two different models too are a bit of a let down as well.
Side note: It also makes me a bit angry that they are already releasing a D3200..the D3100 came out not too long ago...and was one of their best selling DSLRs..and still is. I own one and feel a bit ripped off that its already getting replaced.

Just and update..the Raw file size falls in at around 75mb per image. Ouch!
The 4fps shooting is VERY disappointing (EVERY type of photography pretty much needs a fast shooting mode..not just sports).
The only good thing about this camera is that once its out, prices on used D700's (and even D3s) are going to drop. May be a good time to pick up an old model full frame![]()
Also disappointed in this. I was hoping for a D3s "light," essentially, and this is not it. I'd rather have a 12-16mp camera, better high ISO performance, and faster FPS, among other things.
Problem with the D800 is the other increase in costs you'll have for larger cards / hard drives and processing those images is going to make the most of all your RAM.
I still wish there was a camera between the D4 / D3s and D700 as there is a gap there, in terms of price more than anything else.
I've currently got a D300 and next step up will have to be the D4 as it looks like Nikon have already discontinued the D3s, I believe in part to the widespread flooding at their factories at the end of last year.
while I completely agree with you since you seem to be following the tried and true (up a model and a generation) there is simply a massive financial difference.
6K for the D4 is a tough one to swallow if you aren't making a great living from your camera. I am a wedding photographer and I have the found there is not enough difference in ISO capability between the D7000 and the D700 to justify spending 1500 extra just for a full frame sensor.
Yeah, you're right, there isnt enough of a difference between those two models. Between the D300 and D3S there is though, a big difference. Got the D300 3 years ago, but doing more now and it would be ideal to have two bodies, especially with one for high ISO capabilities.
