I remember a setting on an old SLR camera called a "b" stop (I think) that allowed me to keep the shutter open while someone quickly stepped into frame and then left. That made what appeared to be a ghost. Is there a way to do this with a DSLR? Or does it have to be done afterward?

The process would be the same on a DLSR, you would just have to have the shutter speed slow enough to ghost the person. As far as I know no DSLR has a "b-stop" setting. An "f-stop" refers to the diameter of your aperture and is shown as f/2, f/2.8, f/8, etc. and that can be controlled in either Aperture Priority (A) or Manual Mode (M).

Your best bet would be to use the Shutter Priority (S) or Manual Mode (M) settings. This would give you full control over how long you want the shutter speed to be; probably at least 1 second to get the ghost effect I would think. You will need a tripod (or something to sit the camera on) while you do this or else everything will be blurry.

The description you are giving sounds like bulb mode. As long as the shutter bottom is depressed, the shutter stays open and yes DSLR's have it.
