there is already a waterfall from Aireals (sp?) Groto.....dont consider it as much of an eyesoar as some other Closed attractions....Timekeeper, with a bench infront of the doors...the CoP, with that big sign in front just teasing us......the wall in front of the Sea Cabs, with a Q that goes into it.....that is an eyesoar more then 20K

NOTE....lets not let this thread get into another 20K disscusion........please stick to the fountain.....i cant talk about 20K anymore!!!!!

fountain is a great idea bu ti dont think it is needed. i dont think it is and eyesore at all. if the characters werent there it might be but the is something there so i think they should leave it alone

I do likee of a fountain in the lagoon to dress is up somewhat. Also, I think that the character greeting area in front of the lagoon should be remodled. Didn't like the look of it when it was the 20,000 Legues queue and I still think it just doesn't fit.

They should just put an attraction there!! I mean, Mickey's Star Traders is called an attraction...this is purely rediculous!!!

Heading for the great escape.
It is an attraction just in the wrong park. As the home of 10 000000 transient mossies it is an atraction well worth seeing, and could be well suited to either AK or to the new Egypt pavillion in Epcot, just rename it West Nile:)

And build a new shop called 'Malaria mickeys!'

It's too bad that people see the lagoon as an eyesore these days. For many years after the closing of the ride it was still a beautiful sight due to the impressive fleet of stationary Nautili and the bright colorful coral formations still visible under the water. Even after the subs were removed and the Ariels Grotto area was built the crystal clear water was nice to see and think about. It's been about 4 years since I've been to Orlando so if it's condition has worsened it's news to me.

I still would love to bring my scuba gear to the park and go diving through the attraction track, provided that I didn't have any open cuts or sores and had a bathtub full of windex to wash myself in once I was out of the water.

This is just a request so please don't attack me. I just wanted to know if anyone could please get some nice detailed pictures of the lagoon now for me b/c my mom has told me we don't have the funds to go back to WDW for like 2 years. thanks a million!

Something Little Mermaidish would be nice, maybe a King Triton statue with many of the cast from the movie in bronze with water dancing around it would be nice. Ya know, for that future TLM ride that would fit perfectly into Fantasyland. ;)

Oops, there I go wishing again...:veryconfu

Not a bad idea, but if they were to build a fountain it would definitely have to be lightweight and probably built of plastic if it's going to be bigger than a water fountain. The lagoon used to be adorned by having the fleet of Nautili still stationed in the water but they were removed because of weight concerns, so any construction done in the lagoon is going to have to be similarly lighter...unless maybe you span some supports across the lagoon under the water so that they were hidden and kept the weight of the fountain off the floor of the lagoon... it would be an interesting imagineering challenge to build a statue that was aesthetically pleasing yet lightweight.

This doesn't make sense to me. Didn't they design the lagoon to be filled with water and subs?? Did they design it wrong? If not, why were the subs all of a sudden too heavy?

I'm also surprised that Disney is putting so much money into Epcot and Project Gemini and NOT doing something to utilize this empty lot in the premier themed land in their premier park.

Do you think maybe they haven't figured out what to do with it yet? Or are they waiting to finish Philharmagic first? I can't imagine they'd leave it an empty lagoon forever.

If they already knew what they were putting there it would have been done a long time ago so my guess is they don't know what they'll put in it.

Good point dreamer. We all have seen numerous reasons why 20K was taken out. The one I have to doubt is the weight. If weight was a concern, they would drain the pond. The water weighs vastly more than the subs, so I doubt if taking out the subs would be enough to alleviate the problem.

The Reason!

We had asked about 20,000 leagues being removed on our first Keys to the Kingdom backstage tour. Our tour guide explained that the attraction was removed basically for two reasons. First, the subs were not accessible for everyone which is a big deal for Disney as the attractions are meant to be accessible to everyone, the whole family. Second, the company that manufactured the subs and the replacement parts went out of business. This meant that Disney couldn’t buy replacement parts, and it was determined that it would be too expensive for Disney to make replacement parts on their own. I’m not suggesting that this is the reason they were removed, just passing along what was explained to us by a seasoned cast member who is paid to know a thing or two about the park and its attractions. :)

See, that's what I thought when I heard the rumor. The explanation could be is that while having the subs out of the water (and the displacement of the subs replaced with more water) the weight on the floor of the lagoon would be greater, but putting a sub on the track puts pressure directly on the supports of the track and not distributed evenly along the floor. Perhaps there were specific points under the lagoon that were giving way due to the track weight and not the lagoon in general, and removing the subs helped ease that problem.
