20,000 Leagues Returning to Disneyworld & Disneyland?

In the Disneyland Podcast for 6/2 there was an interview with Marty Sklar. He stated "Even with the Submarines, which we are bringing back next year, I think about Admiral Joe Fowler who ran construction of Disneyland and Walt Disney World and he was responsible for building those submarines and the reason they still have a 50 year life left is because Admiral Fowler ran the San Francisco ship yards during the second World War"

Could it be that 20,000 is not gone forever? Maybe they just want to change the location of that Ride in Walt Disney World, so they did away with the original location and are going to put in somewhere new ... like Tomorrowland?

I believe they're are going to be used for the Nemo Sub attraction over at Disneyland. I could be wrong.

Sorry, but I'd have to assume that he was referring to the Disneyland counterpart to 20K -- The Submarine Voyage thru Liquid Space, which is re-opening next year as the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

I think it is safe to say that, for the time being, 20k is not returning to Walt DisneyWorld.

I'm sorry:( . I miss it too.

This is NOT referring to WDW, only to Disneyland -- where the submarines (different from those at WDW) are being converted into a Nemo Ride. The Nemo Ride at WDW will be at Epcot in The Living Seas, currently under renovation. 20K is not coming back to WDW.

Sklar's comments made me think about ways this attraction could be revived. It's a shame that it will not be experienced anymore. I mean, with the exception of Outer Space ... what happens in the depths of the ocean is really the only mystery that has not been solved in the last 50 or so years. An attraction that really took deep sea exploration to the next level and had a great theme seems like it would be a smash hit.

Plus, Sklar seemed to give major props to the Admiral. I wonder if those original subs were ocean ready?

Joe Fowler definitely deserves a lot of respect and credit. He supervised the construction of the original parts of WDW and did a great job.

I doubt the subs were made to travel in open water though.

Stop exciting me so early in the morning. Its ok though. I wish 20K came back. Thats good that they are going to use a bit of history in a new ride.

There is something I have always wondered about. Was the sub ride at DL saved because so many people were upset about the closure of 20K at MK? I can imagine that both attractions suffered from the same maintenance, capacity, ADA, and technical issues that lead to 20k's decommission. So why was DL's sub ride saved and MK's was not?

Nope. No connection there.

20K was closed because park ops didn't want to deal with the hassle of the attraction. DL was much more tolerant of the ride's faults. The ride's closure out at DL was never meant to last this long, anyway. There has been nearly constant conceptual work for a new sub ride at DL since the day "Submarine Voyage" closed. Atlantis, etc.

Makes sense. From a podcast I heard it sounds like they have overcome a few of the maintenance issues such as using crushed glass in a resin instead of paint to eliminate the paint fading so quickly under chlorinated water and a propulsion system similar to the one used in UoE.

DLs have been closed since 1998. Rumours had flown around for years before Nemo got green-lighted. The strongest was an Atlantis story, but we know how well that film did. This is a guess on my part, but it would have been much more difficult to remove the "works" in DL than it was in WDW since it's intertwined with the monorail and Autopia.

Cheers.

If I remember reading or hearing somewhere, one of the major factors for closing the mk version was because the ride was far from repair. The sub ride was leaking pretty bad by the end into the utilidor. It was easier just to drain the ride then to try to fix it. I just wonder if the jungle cruise leaks or if its not over top of the utilidor?
