but i just have to know.....

WHy was this attraction shut down?

and are they going to replace it with something?

or do we just have to keep looking at its lonely corpse props just floating there in the water? its kind of depressing really.....

Depends if you want the typical corporate response, or a more realistic one.

The company statement is always something like "Disneyland was never meant to turn into a museum, and we are always looking at making room for brand new and exciting attractions."

However since the reality is it's set empty for over 5 years, I'm quite confident they did not close it with the intent of installing a new attraction immidiately. In fact they were a little over-confident of their "New Tomorrowland" and thought it would be such a success with a new thrill attraction Rocket Rods, that they didn't think anybody would miss the submarines, and closed them the year before the new Tomorrowland opened.

There have been rumors that range from a Little Mermaid attraction, then it switched to rumors of an Atlantis based attraction, and the current rumors are that it would be based on the upcoming "Finding Nemo" release scheduled for a theater release next year, which is going to be Pixar's newest offering.

Since attractions take a couple years, and nothing has been officially announced, I would not hold by breath for a replacement attraction anytime soon, although I'm sure one day it will, but probably not until after the 50th.

Well, the Disneyland version was actually the Submarine Voyage. 20K was only the WDW version. The only 20K stuff at Disneyland was an exhibit of props from the movie that were there before. DL's subs were streamlined yellow vehicles, while WDW's were green Nautilus subs.

Anyway, there are a few reasons why they closed down. Leaky lagoon at DL, high-cost/low-ride-count attraction, diesel fumes, heavy maintenance, etc. I doubt we'll see anything in either park's lagoon any time soon. While I'm sure that the Imagineers have dozens of workable ideas, the costs of rehabbing the lagoons are probably beyond what corporate wants to spend right now, especially as they try to stop the hemorrhaging over at DCA and try to do something for DL's 50th that'll increase attendance substantially.

I heard From a Ex-Cast Member
That if they drain the lagoon
The Matterhorne would colapse I guess the water has something to do with the structure of the the Mountain .
Im not sure

I have a View Master reel showing the 20,000 Leagues
attraction at Disneyland
But it Never had Subs there Just like Bagheera said.

But!! There still is a Part of that Movie used in Disneyland today:)
The Pipe Organ from the Nautilas
is in the Haunted Mansion Ballroom.

I didn't realize that 20K had been closed at BOTH parks. I saw the Travel Channel special about Disney Seas Tokyo, and it looked like an updated version was running there.

I agree tho, it makes me sad every time I walk by that attraction...

:(

The lagoon is still there Cal, just no attraction in it. But at Magic Kingdom it's in Fantasyland, rather then in Tomorrowland like at Disneyland.

Yes, it is really a shame that they have closed that atraction...it will be missed. Well, I am not sure what should be done in Disneyland to replace it, but in Disney World would be great if they replace it by The Matterhorn. Would be a great adiction to DW.
