2 Years Away

I am about 2 years away from retiring from a 22 year career in the military. The last 14 years in the Recruiting Service. I have a BS in Business Administration and the plan is to move to Orlando and hopefully secure employment with the Walt Disney Company somewhere in HR, Sales Manager, Management, etc. Is there anything special I should be doing now to make myself competitive, any distance learning that Disney recommends. I have 2 years to prepare to make this dream come true. Any recommendations will help. Thanks.

See if there is someone in those areas now that you can start taking to that may be able to help you get in the door. Disney is all about promoting from within and most of their professional positions come from the front lines or interns. Probably not the answer you were hoping to hear, but I know from a lot of trying that this is usually how these things go.

Not to disagree but are we sure about this mentality that their professional cadre are all basically internal promos? I've always had a hard time believing that a company this large has the ability to sustain itself on internal personnel always being raised up with the correct skill levels. They must (a) have an ungodly training program and (b)pick only the most perfect candidates who all have the potential to continually move up in the ranks. Not sure of their attrition or turnover rates but they can't be THAT much better than industry average, especially if their compensation program is not stellar (I've never heard that it is).

I look at the career site and I see multiple positions that, in other companies, would command 6 figure salaries. Are we saying that those openings are only for show and that the grunt positions are the only ones worth applying for?

All of there professional positions...of course not. However, having been networking my off with that company for years now, I have an idea of how much they do look to promote from within. Even the positions that you see that made there way out to the careers site are still being heavily recruited from within their ranks. Disney is a company that is big on promoting people within their organization and that fit with their culture. While you may see 75 postings out on the web, Disney has plans to fill most of those with current cast members. Also, with what you consider to be positions commanding 6 figure salaries, Disney knows that they can probably get a current CM to do for even less.

Thanks for the info. Anyone with any other experiences would be greatly appreciated. How about anyone that started from outside Disney, what was your experience in the hiring process?
