Has anybody brought down portable 2-way radios into the park. I was wondering if they worked. We have cobras and was thinking about bringing them in case our group got separated.

Comments???

Absolutley take your radios!!!! We bought our for this specific reason a few years ago, and have taken htem on several trips to WDW since. They are worth their weight in gold. You should know that more and more people have figured this out, and finding an unoccupied channel is getting harder and harder. None the less, I think they are essential Disney survival items.

Have any good tips as to how to work it out with your group when you get a bad connection? Do you just have 3 favorite stations and switch between them? i don't know.

We have the Motorola Talkabouts with over 500 frequencies (14 channels and 38 interferance codes) so finding our own station is not a problem. If your radios only have three channels, they may be more trouble than they are worth because there would be so much cross talk. We have been using our radios for over 3 years at WDW and have noticed a dramatic increase the number of people carrying them. Last time (Nov. '01) it seemed like everyother person had one. They are very helpfull. Good Luck

Radios

As everyone as said the radios are priceles. he last trip i took we had a group of nine. Age ranging from 9 to 43.So ne less everyone wanted to go dfferent ways. Even a centra meeting palce can be bad if a group is in a long line and does not want to lose their spot...they can call you then you wont waste time waiting on them

We bought a set that we used in April last year. Just a few hints from what we experienced.

We were there at a peak time, and alot of people were using them. We discovered that even if you have the private codes, if someone else is close enough (within 20 feet), they can "bleed through" your transmission if they are on the same primary channel. Don't be surprised if you experience this, it doesn't mean your radios aren't working right. Let's face it, there are $35 family radios, and then there are $1500 professional radios.

We found the headsets useless. But, it was crowded. Alot of background noise that the microphones would pick up. You may have better luck when you are there if you try the headphones.

We used Cobras and found a nuisance with our models. The power button was on the face, right above the LED readout. We stored the radios in our packs and they would be constantly turned on or off, being bumped around by normal activities.

We tested them around the neighborhood we live in, and found the range pretty good. It was greatly reduced at WDW, probably due to buildings, RFI, other radios, etc.

We had codes for each family member. For instance, I was "Delta 1" - for Dad, my wife was "Echo 1", and... you get the idea. And yes, we had preset names for certain channels and privacy codes. We are not normally so "code" oriented, but several friends had told us about experiences with young people using insults and profanity, using peoples names. We only experienced something similar like that once at WDW.

This year we are taking just cell phones. Our coverage includes several states including Florida with no roaming fees, and we are hoping this will work just as well, if not better. Good luck, hope everyone's tips help, and enjoy the WDW experience.:)

We bought Cobra MicroTalk 3's a few years ago. We've used them on 4 trips to WDW and haven't ever had any problems with them. Our last trip was during Christmas / New Year's. Even though the park was crowded, we had no problems using our radios in any of the parks. It sure does make it easy when some of your party splits up to do other things and then needs to find each other again afterwards. The fast walkers can go on ahead and get in line at an attraction, while the slow ones (usually with the younger kids) can catch up and find them easily with the radios. I highly recommend them.
