The OC Register today has a story on the recent developments behind both the California High Speed Rail that was approved by voters to the tune of 20 Billion Dollars, and the Las Vegas MagLev that got an 8 Billion Dollar shot in the arm from Obama passing out stimulus money.

CHSR has a better shot at rolling in to Anaheim sooner, perhaps by 2015, since it's been on the drawing boards with continual planning and funding for a decade. But the MagLev could arrive a few years later.

Regardless, Anaheim and their snazzy ARTIC station a few blocks east of Disneyland could be the high speed rail hub of Southern California in a few years.

Dollysmama, this will have no impact on surface streets or regional freeways.

Both of these lines are high-speed, long-distance rail lines that will compete with the airlines, not freeways. If anything this will make local traffic around Disneyland more congested, with the expansion of the current Anaheim train station into the sprawling ARTIC facility making Anaheim the high-speed hub for the entire SoCal region.

There are already regional commuter lines into Anaheim via several Metrolink rail lines and Amtrak Surfliner service. Metrolink is commuter rail like your Sounder, except instead of Sounder's modest 70 miles of track with 9 stations, Metrolink has 525 miles of track with 55 stations on seven different lines. One of those 55 Metrolink stations is in Anaheim about a mile from Disneyland, with additional stations in Anaheim Hills and a few miles away in City of Orange.

Because I've always wanted to dig up an old thread... :D

Anaheim's City Council unanimously approved the big ARTIC station on Tuesday night. Since the station is already fully funded (assuming it doesn't go over budget), this clears another important hurdle to beginning construction.
