This was the 60s. lots of drugs in hollywood, lots of drugs everywhere. some of thes personalities were under contract to do some of this "goofy" stuff so they could be allowed to do other things. for instance Nemoy wanted to direct movies, Paramount wanted him to do the Star treck movies in return. I don't think there's anyone here who hasn't had this darn thing going through their head since they first heard it. (I had heard the William Shatner ones and I listened to an entire Leonard Nimoy album once, but I don't think I ever heard the "Bilbo Baggins" one before.)

I'm willing to admit there have been at least three or four times I have begun singing it at the top of my lungs.
