11 People Stranded On E.T. ride

This incident just made me hate our local news stations more than I already did. Sensationalizing a routine breakdown as if someone died.

Why would they need to call in the fire department, they didn't really mention anyone in distress or anything. Ride breaks down, it's boring, kinda ruins the moment but things break. Must be a slow news day.

Some rides (i.e. ET at Universal and P.P.F. at WDW) don't have emergency exits in the event a ride vehicle stalls. If you were to get stranded on PPF Disney would have to call the fire department to bring ladders and help people down from the ride vehicles. The platform is 8 to 10 ft. below so as to prevent injury from jumping down you must walk down a ladder. I'm not sure what E.T. is like because I've never rode it but I'm sure its the same reasoning. The exit strategy in the event of an emergency is the main reason why PPF is not ADA compliant.

I'm guessing this poster finds it funny because it happened ad USF and not WDW had this happened on Peter Pan they wouldn't have found it in the slightest bit funny.

I like USF better than WDW so :zipit:

Also I found it funny that a breakdown got on the news and also that nothing seriously bad happened apart from having sore bottom!

After all these years then i dont see how a better method has not ever been thought of. Unless there is some sort of regulation that requires the fire department be involved, why cant universal or Disney themselves buy a few ladders or a scissor lift?

My thought as to why Disney and Uni opt to call in the fire department is possibly due to liability insurance coverages and costs to carry policies designed to cover events where guests were injured being assisted by park staff in cases like this instead of rescue professionals.

I wonder what part of ET this was.... I'm guessing the forest portion of the ride as the latter parts definitely have pretty easily accessible exits... even the Flying over the city/moon section has platforms to the right of your bikes should you be evacuated.

In many cases you have guests on the ride calling 911 on their cell because they've been sitting for more than three minutes.

Yeah....sad but true.

Theme parks should start taking action when the media takes routine events like rides shutting down and tries to sensationalize them as something bad. All they're doing is slandering the parks for ratings.
