    Hurricane Irma

Seems very, very likely that Disney and Universal's Orlando-area parks will all be open Tuesday morning, correct?

    Hurricane Irma

Bolded part is not true. Orlando, and especially Disney world specifically, are not east of Miami. They are definitely west of Miami. The center of the storm is not really that close to Orlando's longitude just yet. I agree that it is probably right to be cautiously optimistic, especially for...

    Hurricane Irma

i mean dude... it is a little breezy and rainy right now. people are okay. the evacuation window is beginning to close but you can still get out of key west if you absolutely have to. if you are in a secure place in southeast florida, smoking a cigar or having a glass of wine on the porch or...

    Hurricane Irma

really? It will be rainy and windy in Warner Robins. That is really weird all businesses would just shut down for that. It's not going to be a violent hurricane up there.

    Hurricane Irma

Whoa whoa whoa. Tallahassee is still on the west side of the projected path and the storm is barely forecasted to be a hurricane by the time it gets anywhere close to Tallahassee. There's no need to evacuate Tallahassee right now. Wait another day. See what it looks like then. As the storm gets...

    Hurricane Irma

I'd really just wait and see what it looks like in the morning. Also, any particular reason you want to drive to JAX? Dothan, AL seems like a more logical choice.

    Hurricane Irma

Car trouble would be disastrous. That, I grant you. Although if you leave now, or even tomorrow morning you would still very likely be able to get help. But the road? Come on. It's 3 hours, maybe a touch more from Key West to Miami. And if I'm trying to outrun a hurricane, I'll get there in 2...

    Hurricane Irma

This is awful advice, and people were saying this as early as yesterday, which is laughable. It's still laughable, really. If you are in Key West, you have time to get out. The roads are empty. You can be in Miami by midnight. Way too dangerous? Give me a freakin break. The outer rain bands...

    Hurricane Irma

2004 had Ivan, though that was interior Alabama that took it on the chin, not Georgia. Dennis was also MS/AL inland, and also not particularly strong. Katrina was rough in MS and parts of AL. But really any landfalling storm on the central or eastern Gulf coast can bring down tree limbs and...

    Hurricane Irma

Because like 60% of the state's population lives in the greater Atlanta area. And no, building codes in Georgia aren't as stringent as they are in Miami-Dade... but I don't think you're going to see too many homes (well, maybe mobile homes) being damaged by winds in the 50-70mph range, except...

    Hurricane Irma

A day or two ago I would have probably felt okay riding it out in Key West, but since things have trended westward, I'd get out as a course of least regret. That guy doesn't sound like an idiot though. I hope he knows what he is doing. And is in a reinforced concrete/steel structure.

    Hurricane Irma

yeah i would think you're good to go anytime after monday really. could be tough getting to orlando tuesday, but after that, should be fine.

    Hurricane Irma

I am writing these posts from my desk in Riverchase. I should be driving down to Orlando for my week long Disney trip, but I digress...

    Hurricane Irma

And Irma's absolute worst effects, as it stands right now, looks like will be confined to the Keys and the mostly unpopulated Everglades/Big Cypress. In fact, if it comes in on the southwest corner of the state near where state route 9336 ends, there's a pretty decent chance no population center...

    Hurricane Irma

Eh, Andrew was a cat 5, Charley had winds of 145 or 150 at landfall. Labor Day 1938 was a cat 5. Florida has been struck by countless cat 4s. The hyperbole is getting out of control. Right now the forecast falls for the storm to landfall on a very unpopulated part of Florida at about the same...

    Hurricane Irma

You will be fine in Tallahassee. If it does somehow stay off the peninsula and make a panhandle hit, you'll have lots of extra time to move... but even then, Tallahassee should be fine as long as you are in a well built structure.

    Hurricane Irma

Thankfully the storm has weakened a pretty good bit over the last 24 hours. Still a nasty storm, but a 145mph storm coming in 40-50 miles southwest of Miami is significantly better than a 170-180mph storm coming in right over the top of Miami. Maybe, just maybe, the absolute worst of the...

    Hurricane Irma

Really? Google shows that road is pretty busy in spots but moving at a decent clip overall. I would have guessed more like 3 hours to make that drive. Google says you can get from Yeehaw Jct all the way out to The Villages in just over 2. Edit... Oh okay. From Key West in 13 hours. That...

    Hurricane Irma

Well, I was all set to drive in this Saturday for 7 days... 4 at Disney and then 3 at the Universal Parks. Had FastPasses and Dinner reservations (Free Dining!) all booked and a great itinerary planned and poof. Really unfortunate, but it's just looking like best case 2 of our 4 Disney days...

    Hurricane Irma

lol. it's not the size of the storm; it's the angle of approach. if this same size storm was moving due west and headed straight for miami, you'd evacuate the endangered areas of monroe, dade, broward, palm beach counties.... maybe collier, martin, and st. lucie counties. the issue is that...
