Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Hopefully he's learned from making In the Heights. I was not a fan of the direction in that screen adaptation -- so many of the dance sequences in that one had a ton of MTV cutting and closeups instead of just letting the choreography do the work.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

The long runtime was making me think that they're incorporating more from the novel into the musical's story, but that seems hard to do while maintaining that PG rating, so I'm not sure what all's going into turning a ~3 hour musical into a movie that's twice that length.

News New Snacks and Cocktails at Oga's Cantina - November 2024

Wow, that was sooner than I expected. We were there just 10 days ago and our server was hinting that menu changes were coming -- we were debating the Black Spire Brew and she told us to order it before it disappeared. Having more food offerings is a good idea. I've definitely seen people bail...

Walt Disney World Holiday Season 2024

Definitely not at the event. Not sure if that could be found elsewhere, though. The main pair was pretty legit -- good lifts and spins, etc.

Walt Disney World Holiday Season 2024

Can anyone remind me when they start distributing wristbands for guests already inside a park? e.g. Jollywood starts at 7:30 tonight and I know that the dedicated entrance line opens at 6:00, but are wristbands handed out inside the park any earlier than that if I'm already in the Studios?

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

This was originally going to be a Hulu-only release, wasn't it? Any box office will be good for it, especially if it manages to garner any nominations. Heller has gotten Oscar noms for her actors in offbeat roles before (Melissa McCarthy & Richard E. Grant), so anything is possible here. I...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

And we still haven't even seen it yet. That's gonna be a solid $12 more (or whatever the current A-List rate x2 is) for it at the box office. This week. Hopefully. Maybe.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It'll be interesting to see how big the fall off is in week 2 for this one. It's losing some 40% of its screenings (including all of the premium ones, as Animaniac suggested) near me. Deadpool & Wolverine has a ridiculous 179(!) screenings at our 6 AMC theaters on Saturday alone. That's such a...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Really looking forward to this one. Maika Monroe was fantastic in Watcher (a bit of a twist on Rear Window) from a couple years back. But I have a lot of catching up to do before we get there. After a long hiatus from the theater, we just saw Kinds of Kindness and The Fall Guy today. I can see...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

If there happen to be any fans of hand-drawn animation in the house, I could not recommend Robot Dreams more. It was probably my favorite of the 2023 animated nominations. Simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking, all without any real dialogue. It's around this weekend, too, but...

    MARVEL's Blade starring Mahershala Ali

I'm definitely not an anti-color/flavor person when it comes to stories. Maybe it just comes down to that I don't think the stories in this particular universe have been very well executed. Some of that comes from them not having written complete stories before filming, some of that comes from...

    MARVEL's Blade starring Mahershala Ali

I don't hate this idea at all, and it is more or less how comic readership works. It's more the constant need to add fluff unrelated to the story being told in order to serve that future crossover that's the problem for me. Just let the crossover movies deal with the big crossover things.

    MARVEL's Blade starring Mahershala Ali

I really think they need to stop building around/toward massive franchise-wide crossovers. Those are generally the less interesting stories in the comics anyway. Like, sure, we know all of these heroes are in the same universe, so drop in appearances/cameos/references across franchises where it...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I wonder what even is learnable from this. What on Earth happened in the zeitgeist to take it from a very respectable estimated $85m opening (estimated the Tuesday of release week, so that was based on pre-sales, buzz, etc. ex...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Do I have the rest of the 2024 slate right? Jun 28 - Kinds of Kindness (Searchlight) Jul 26 - Deadpool & Wolverine (20th) Aug 16 - Alien: Romulus (20th) Oct 18 - A Real Pain (Searchlight) Nov 27 - Moana 2 Dec 6 - Nightb***h (Searchlight) Dec 20 - Mufasa: The Lion King I know the reasons for...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I still have trouble fathoming what a Barry Jenkins work-for-hire movie will be like, much less one that's 100% CG. It's just a baffling pairing. I would never want to doubt the man, but we're talking a need for mass appeal here. I think Sonic 3 wins that weekend and the holidays in general.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Speak for yourself. My position was that it was a mediocre slate (for mass appeal, I enjoyed a couple of them myself), but not one *on its own* worthy of the amount of vitriol it received or the *scope* of failure it had at the box office. In other words, it even underperformed its decidedly mid...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It wasn't even really that, even. That headline is from a Rotten Tomatoes piece that's just aggregating together a bunch of professional critics' comments. And it reads that way because professional critics kind of somewhat liked Lightyear [Metascore 60] since they're generally trained to not...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Not included in Thursday's numbers (despite having previews) is Universal's [Focus] new release, The Bikeriders. Fans of the show may recall this as a movie originally slated to come out under the Disney/20th label last year, but they dumped it (or lost it? Not sure which) due to last year's...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I think I'm still failing to see your point. So you seem to agree that it's unrealistic that all of those movies do "Barbie numbers," but your fear is what? That people here and/or in the Disney business commenting universe will have bad things to say about that?
