News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

Does movie IP always have a big existing fanbase, though? Some of them do--like Frozen, Nemo, Star Wars. I'm less certain about some of the other ones, like Zootopia, Tron, Ratatouille. I'd argue you might actually have a larger existing fanbase for "dinosaurs" or "pirates" or "haunted...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

It would be nice if some IP other than TV shows and movies would be considered. Some people in my family enjoy the theme parks but don't watch all that many Disney movies. I'm quite sure most of them have no idea what Zootopia is. But National Geographic would be a great IP for AK. National...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

A ride based on IP is often different than one that introduces a new character, because when you introduce a new character, everyone comes in fresh, so the ride does the work. Think of Dreamfinder creating Figment, or the ways that Haunted Mansion and Pirates draw you in very deliberately. On...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

As others have pointed out, I think one of the issues is what these IP based attractions will look like in 20+ years. Sure, that list of movies might be familiar now (although my kids don't know most of them) but what if Disney had built attractions based on movies from 20 or 30 years ago that...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

I do think there's a difference between Avatar as source material and Sleeping Beauty. One is a story that was passed around through oral history starting in the 16th century, and is based on even earlier legends. And one was...well...Avatar. I'll be a little surprised if people are still...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

It's easy to simply declare that park guests want IP but I'm not sure. There is *so much* media that competes for kids' (and adults') attention nowadays. When we last went to the parks, we didn't even recognize half the characters. We like Disney shows ok, but we don't fixate on everything...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Do we really think they'd be insane enough to make it even *more* complex by adding an additional feature to the already convoluted system? That is, everything stays as it is, but now there's an additional feature for one pre-booking at an additional cost? Disney would never be so crazy to try...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Ha, I am definitely a goofball when it comes to Disney. I'd argue, though, that they very much want people to be goofballs about Disney. That's why they need to carefully examine using these Six Flags-style add-ons in its parks. Does everyone do it? Sure. But you'll notice that Six Flags...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Well, there are other things they can do, including extending hours. But that costs money instead of making it, so it seems very unlikely. The main thing I hate about all these systems is that they create the feeling of "haves" and "have-nots," which I had never experienced before at a...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Hey, I *loved* Fastpass, and I never even stayed on site. But other people don't love it. And I agree that long lines are a problem that needs to be dealt with. I just don't think that Genie+ or whatever permutation we end up with actually "solves" the problem of long lines.

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

What's notable in these responses is that everyone wants something different. Some people like day-of, some people like pre-planned, some the day before and some longer. Some think we should have to wait until we're in the park. None of these strike me as good solutions because the whole...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

For what it's worth, I have an acquaintance who just went to Disney World. Definitely not a superfan, but she did plan ahead. When I casually asked how the trip was, she said she loved a lot of the rides, including the new ones. But she also brought up how much she hated having to use Genie+...

Recommendation for quiet onsite resort room...but not too far from things?

We are planning a split stay with CB and FQ. For CB we are asking to be in a tucked-away spot on the top floor. Then we'll stay at FQ away from the pool. We did want to get a balcony but those resorts were too expensive for us. At least we avoided the value resorts! I've never stayed onsite...

News Impressions de France only available for limited time in the mornings

I am sort of an Epcot purist, and really hate the IP stuff and the singalong, but I admit that I am also a visitor that doesn't get excited about seeing films in theme parks anymore. Especially after being stuck home during Covid, conducting lots of meetings virtually, etc. I am staring at a...

Recommendation for quiet onsite resort room...but not too far from things?

I was a little leery of renting points because there's no easy way to cancel, from what I understand? There are a few reasons I'd like this to be an option. It's so easy to cancel a rooms-only reservation...

Recommendation for quiet onsite resort room...but not too far from things?

Despite being a WDW fan, I've never stayed on site. We may try it for the first time this spring/summer. The problem is, my spouse is easily overwhelmed by a lot of noise and people (insert joke about going to WDW here). He will probably stay back at the resort while the rest of us go to the...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

What if you got a certain number of attractions and then that was it. Like, you'd book two or three attractions for the day, but you could never add more. That way there would at least be less burden on the system and there would be somewhat less pressure to game it to get as many attractions...

EPCOT Great watch: The Senseless Death of EPCOT

Do we have any concrete evidence that movie IP is a significant driver of interest in theme park rides? Or are we just used to thinking that it must be? There's so much content out there on Youtube/streaming/etc that I'm not convinced people are as attached to movies (why is it *always*...

EPCOT Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind SPOILER Thread

I think you may be lumping me in with some other people's complaints about simulators, which is not what I mean. It's just my own impression about the style of the presentation and the pre-shows, etc. I guess it's the nature of the IP, too, which feels a bit different than the Mr. Toad/Snow...

EPCOT Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind SPOILER Thread

Is it just me, or does this look/feel more like a Universal ride than a Disney ride? It's the screens, the movie tie-in, and the design. It's not a criticism of the ride, but more an observation about what Disney is trying to be and where they're taking their inspiration from.
