Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Well, about half of guests buy it, right? So it's in half of people's heads, I guess. But even though I prepped my kids for waiting a lot, and even though we got on a lot of rides without huge waits, it was pretty dispiriting being held at the merge point of Jungle Cruise or whatever and...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Another bizarre question now is, what if you only want Genie+ reservations at, say, Epcot, but you plan to spend the morning in AK. You don't want Genie+ at AK because you're just going to do shows and see the trails. (I did this exact thing because it was too hot to do the trails in the...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

I find it very odd that they're willing to keep making these adjustments to their park upcharges. Parking fee, no parking fee, park reservations, park hopping after 2, no we'll change that, Genie+ one fee, variable fees, now you can modify, one park, multi-park. When I called to make my booking...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

I'm surprised that Disney doesn't try to make sure they get some good publicity along with all of this genie+ stuff. Throw us some crumbs with a few (even cheap) offerings or special parades or *anything* to distract from the fact that they keep making lousy changes to an already lousy system...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

The bottom line is that this is one more decision on top of a lot of other decisions. It used to be "genie or no genie". Now there is another decision to make. Is it earth-shattering? No. I can even understand why they made the change. But it's one more little calculation on top of a lot...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Well, we had park hoppers and ended up not hopping on half our days. That's just what my kids wanted. But we didn't know that at the start of the day. So I wouldn't have known which genie+ to buy. Maybe they figure you just buy the multi-pass anyway and eat the cost. What's another $30.

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

Maybe we're just super easygoing (although no one has ever called me that, haha), but we started every morning not knowing which park we'd end at. A lot of times we ended up back at the same park we started at. I wouldn't have known which genie+ to buy. Fortunately, I don't have plans to...

Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World

It really does just add one more layer of complication. On this trip we did a split stay between two resorts, and when the second hotel gave us new tickets, they mixed up the names. My party had split up that day, so I ended up having to work with guest relations because my husband had a...

Is attendance really down at WDW this or…

The Sunshine Flyer really tries to be fun. It's not the same, but the drivers are costumed and friendly, the buses are themed, and they play silly cartoons. They honk and everyone cheers when you enter the Disney grounds.

Is attendance really down at WDW this or…

Believe me, I think about that a lot! I *hate* Genie+ so much. And I really hate so many recent changes, including the lack of ME. I do feel like a lot of the "magic" is gone. Mostly I gripe about what Disney has become--I'm just being honest about the cost for us on this trip.

Is attendance really down at WDW this or…

I'm not a fan of any of the recent changes, but after returning from a trip, I'd say it was...not all that expensive, relatively speaking? But we also did it on the cheap. We used the Sunshine Flyer, had groceries delivered for breakfast/lunch/snacks, ate dinner at quick service only, had room...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

My daughter bought a stuffed Figment after riding Imagination, and we had an interesting conversation that went like this: Her: What's Figment from? Me: The ride. Her: No, I mean what movie? Me: No, he's just from the ride. Her: Just from the ride? Just...from the ride? They created...

News Disney testing smart speakers in guest rooms at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club

For what it's worth, we used the smart speaker to order extra blankets today, and it actually worked -- 20 min later we had our blankets. I think that's the main function of the "Hey Disney" thing. Which explains why when you ask for park hours or other information, it tries to give you, say...

News Disney testing smart speakers in guest rooms at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club

We have this in our room at POFQ. I don't know if we're just bad at this, but for us it's comically inaccurate. I asked for ride recommendations (just out of curiosity) and it offered us several hair dryers. I was afraid it was going to really request them so I started shouting at it that we...

Is attendance really down at WDW this or…

Anecdotal, I know, but the only park that has felt unpleasantly crowded to me this trip has been MK. We spent the morning today at AK and did every ride as a near walk-on other than Flight, which was about 35 min. (The posted times were higher, it's true.) It really is baking hot, so we're...

Is attendance really down at WDW this or…

We're here now and have gotten on everything we wanted (in Epcot and DHS so far) without using Genie+. You do have to be a little flexible, but if you check the tip board, you can ride most rides without a long wait. We rode Soarin', Test Track and Runaway Railway as a walk-on several times in...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

I do find it interesting that when people are arguing against original attractions, the ideas they come up with for rides with no movie tie-in are things like driving through a gully or having cheap knockoff characters that no one cares about. It does show how hard it can be to even conceive of...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

For me, the other issue is that most movie IP feels so small. Some of it feels big, like the IP based on centuries-old stories. But most of it just feels like some marketing for a specific film that came out at a particular time. It doesn't get me in the feels, as the kids say today. I think...

News Disney CFO Christine McCarthy says Disney will continue to focus on existing intellectual property for new park investments

This is kind of a weird way to say this, but I wonder if part of the focus on movie IP is that the corporate leaders think people are...a bit...stupid? Like, we can only enjoy things if we're fed content through a screen, and then we get excited to see clips of that same content on a water...
