Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I think it depends on the movie. I think Spacey tends to play very evil and slimy characters, so knowing he's a bad person doesn't really ruin my image of his roles in Seven, House of Cards, etc. American Beauty IS harder to enjoy since the plot of the movie revolves around a middle aged man...

Maybe one of the CGI dwarves will surprise us and be the next Meryl Streep.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Streep got her first Oscar nomination at 29 for The Deer Hunter, and she won the following year for Kramer vs Kramer. That being said, I disagree that Zegler and Elgort didn't have chemistry. I also think Elgort was good in the movie, although not as good costars like Zegler, Mike Faist and...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Dune Part 2 is a much better movie than Mufasa, but glad to see Mufasa prove that movies can still have legs in this day and age even after a weak opening weekend.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It's fine if few saw the movie, people like what they like. What's not fine is people making definitive statements on her acting ability when they've never even seen her breakout performance. There is nothing that annoys me more as a film fan than when people take a strong stand on a movie or...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

What frustrates me about the whole ordeal is the fans mocking Zegler over her acting ability and claiming Gadot is better. I think criticizing Zegler's statements and personality is fair game, but I'm sorry, I'm not going to play along with this alternate reality where we pretend she's a bad...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Again, these are "early reactions" not reviews, and they are from a limited pool of people that Disney allowed to see the film. Think more along the lines of influencers than film critics. Disney allowed people to attend the premiere that it felt would be more inclined to give the movie a...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Early first reactions are almost always positive, I'd wait for the actual review embargo to lift. That being said, I would love nothing more than for the movie to actually be good. I don't LIKE watching bad movies and would love to be happily surprised/proven wrong about this.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

That seems to be the case with a lot of other people, but I don't know why. I was born in the 90s and I LOVED Snow White as a child. It completely captivated me and I enjoyed it much more than Cinderella and the majority of Walt-era Disney films. Maybe it helps that it was one of the first...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I agree that $500-600 million would be the ideal scenario for Snow White. I LOVE the animated original, but in a post-Shrek cynical world most audiences would have a hard time buying an extremely faithful adaptation of the 1937 film. The movie started a lot of Disney tropes that have now...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I think she was decent in the first Wonder Woman because the script/directing played to her strengths. Gadot can work in the right type of role, but she has limited range and this is out of her depth.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I don't dislike Gal Gadot as a person, but based on all of the clips Disney has released of Snow White so far, her performance as the Evil Queen is really bad. Like, razzie-level bad. I didn't have a whole lot of faith in the movie to begin with, but I fear this may be worse than I thought...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I don't think there are any safety concerns for Zegler or Gadot as much as there is concern that the two lead actresses aren't the most PR savvy and Disney knows that reporters will likely try to stir the pot and get them to say something that will lead to a viral moment and ignite even more...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

The Dark Knight should have DEFINITELY gotten in over The Reader. In Bruges, Doubt, the Wrestler, Revolutionary Road and WALLE were also better than the vast majority of the 2008 nominees.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

While I believe The Dark Knight should have been nominated and won Best Picture in 2008, Slumdog Millionare was still a pretty great movie and it made a decent amount of money at the box office ($378 million in 2008). Slumdog made much, much more than more modern winners like Anora or the Shape...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I think the real shift started happening around 2009 when Avatar — the biggest movie of the year — lost to The Hurt Locker, which was at the time the lowest grossing Best Picture winner. I'm not saying Avatar necessarily deserved to win (Inglorious Basterds would have been my pick for that...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

While I agree that the use of C/D-list characters from the characters isn't helping the box office, the biggest problem with Marvel's recent financial failures is the quality of the movies themselves. Thor: Love and Thunder, Quantumania, The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World are just...

Disney's Streaming Services: Disney+ (and Hulu, ESPN+, Star, & hotstar)

Back then, they used the term "politically correct." Woke simply replaced that. I think it would be financially stupid for Disney to re-release Song of the South at this point. It should have gotten a limited Walt Disney Treasures release in the early 2000s, but at this point the movie has...

We also had the Marvels with $206 million. And for non-MCU Marvel movies, Madame Web ended up with $100.5 million and Kraven the Hunter had $61.9 million

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

With the negative reviews for Captain America: Brave New World, I'm going to put a final worldwide box office gross estimate at $300 million. Let's see how it does this weekend.
