It is a series. They released 6-8 books back in the late 90's and just released a new one fairly recently. They are pretty well written and can be read independently although they do feed into an overall storyline.

It's got be a toss up between Norway and Japan. I love Maelstrom (and hope against hope that they don't force Thor into it) and I know I am in the minority but I love the movie afterwards. Japan has the best shop-Who doesn't love watching somebody get a pearl out of the tank?
