That being said, I think this Federal bill has different provisions in it as to who can qualify for aid. A lot of the red tape is being waived and the exact details have not been shared with the states yet (as of earlier this afternoon at least.)

As a follow-up, I applaud NY for providing a lot more transparency than other states. Daily updates on hospitalization rates, ICU rates, # of discharges. Their website is also a lot more slick than other state websites. I enjoy watching Cuomo's press conferences. That being said, It would be...

Ramps don't work that way. It won't be 2500 per week. It will start very slow at beginning of month and increase by the end of the month. S curve. I doubt more than a few hundred of their ventilators will be in the system by the time this peaks. But add up all the other suppliers together and...

It takes several weeks to re-tool a factory, acquire materials, test the process, start making product, and then deliver said product. You're seeing a lot of these deliveries being made now with PPE which means that actions started being taken weeks, or even over a month ago. Just because you...

Yea apparently in Wuhan an estimated ~45k Urns are now being picked up since the lockdown is ending. Lines around the corner. That is a lot more than reported deaths. At least Italy is honest in their reporting that they don't know the true number. On the other hand, other types of deaths are...

One of the models that the White House (Dr. Birx) referred to today was by Dr. Murray at IHME (I've linked to it in a previous post.) It shows the country peaking in about two weeks on average - but it shows Florida with one of the absolute oddest curves in the country. Florida's estimated...

That is quite low compared to the early models. Shelter in place is working. 100,000 would be the equivalent of about 2-3 years of influenza deaths in the US. Or it is about 8 times the amount of H1N1 deaths in 2009 in the US. I see that as positive news.

The two hardest hit areas in the midwest are Detroit metro and Chicago metro - that is where most of this is happening.

Other countries have put the accuracy at 90% but I don't even believe that. The sensitivity/specificity of the test is lower and is different depending on the lab and equipment. This information is not public. Could be as low as 70%. There is a reason that China and SK require TWO negative tests...

Some additional inside info from the midwest: 1) Many hospitals are now requiring ALL staff to wear masks at ALL times. 2) All hospitals are expanding ICU capacities by turning other floors into ICU beds (Post-anesthesia recovery, surgery, etc) 3) The hospitals are right on the verge of a...

There are a lot of reasons why this could happen. 1) There are lots of other infectious respiratory viruses going around: colds, flus, etc. 2) The test is not 100% accurate. The viral load needs to be high enough to be detected in the test AND the test has to be conducted properly. This...

Thank you to the Dr doing the swabbing for your hard work! One important correction though: The hospitalization rate is not 40-50% but more like 15-20%. It was 20% in the early countries, and we've been seeing lower rates in the US (even in NY.) The ICU rate is even lower at under 5%. 3.5% in...

This is a nice website that shows updated models based on when states began lockdowns etc - and tries to provide info on what date resource use will peak. The doom and gloom worst case scenarios don't look like they will pan out (due to lockdowns being implemented) - but some states are in...

This info is incorrect/out of context. They are actually expanding access. They'e changed granting access from individuals to groups - which means they don't allow compassionate use for one person now. They also want to focus their supplies on clinical trials at hospitals. For example, the...

Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been tested - and they can't all be politicians, healthcare workers, and celebrities ;) This morning they stated at least 195,000 tests have already run and that didn't include 15,000 labs (they will be getting daily update on those tests within the next...

I've enjoyed reading your posts - but I want to add one thing. I have a Filipino doctor friend here who still has lots of nurse family back in the Philippines - and they said they haven't seen any of the same situations that you described in previous posts in their hospitals/towns. I'm guessing...

This isn't a flu. It's a novel coronavirus. More similar to SARS (genetically.) If it was the flu, MORE young people would be dying (like during H1N1.) Most of the sad fatal situations you mentioned above have no easy way to prevent (cancer, for example.) This does. Here is your source for...

When your 42 year old neighbor dies in a few weeks you might have a different opinion. It is possible to argue that this "cure" is worse than the virus itself. But I wouldn't proclaim that anyone under 80 is safe. There are hundreds of younger people (30-59) in the ICU right this moment...

It's not ridiculous at all. Most ICU's run at very close to capacity on a good day, especially at this time of year in northern hemisphere. Even a tiny increase in very sick patients will put the entire hospital system under load. Making matters worse is the fact that we aren't doing a good...

Oh the federal government absolutely has legal authority to lock people down. It would be unprecedented and I hope they don't have to do it - but they've publicly stated several times that it is an option. You're right that it is more likely to happen on a state by state basis first, though.
