The smoke and door worked after the big refurbishment for SM:M2 which introduced the new trains but were turned off for HSM. I don't think the recoil will ever come back unless they get to the stage when the entire canon needs replacing and they opt to include the recoil in the replacement.

The Spiderman coaster seems to have lots of exposed steel and fit in a very tight footprint whereas I'd hope any Villains coaster would be more heavily themed and intertwined with the land.
