    Epcot Monorail Being Evacuated

It most likely struck the beam, which then cut power to the train. Sometimes it can take a while to get power back, especially if a train is sitting on the switch like it was. I haven't been in the department for a while so I don't have many details on this particular event. But I really can't...

    Epcot Monorail Being Evacuated

On a related note, if you ever want to have an interesting experience, while boarding a train, grab onto the pole that is just inside the door of the monorail, and grab one of the metal gates at MK/TTC Express at the same time. It's a unique sensation ;)

    Epcot Monorail Being Evacuated

Right. I worked in Monorails for several years and was a part of multiple evacuation drills and a live one myself. I agree that a train being stopped because of a lightning strike is common. I remember piloting a 2 hour 43 minute lap on the Epcot beam in Monorail Black because all the MAPO...

    Epcot Monorail Being Evacuated

And not only that, but the odds of it being struck as it crosses exactly over the one switch on the entire Epcot beam, preventing it from being a "simple" tow and turning it into a full blown evacuation.

    Epcot Monorail Being Evacuated

Sounds like a lightning strike. http://m.wesh.com/news/disney-world-monorail-evacuated-passengers-report-lightning-strike/26937720 If anyone is wondering why the Monorail couldn't be towed, it has stopped in the exact worst location, directly on switchbeam 9. That is the switchbeam that would...

Two New VIP Tours Debuting at Walt Disney World

While these two tours are new, extremely similar versions of them were "trialed" as DCL excursions when the ships were calling at Port Canaveral from New York and Galveston. A bus would bring the groups (20 people per 2 guides) from the port to MK for the Family tour , where the tour would...

Magic Kingdom to test mobile phone charging lockers for guest use

About halfway down Main Street on the right, in the same section as their general lockers. I might add they were constantly being used. I literally had to wait in line for people to come back and another charging locker to open up. There weren't many charging lockers...maybe 20? If I recall...

Magic Kingdom to test mobile phone charging lockers for guest use

I was in Disneyland two weeks ago, where they already have these, and I can't count the times I thought to myself "Why on earth doesn't WDW have these?!" Of course, the same could be said about benches, trees....but I digress....

State soliciting bids for I-Drive rail; closes at end of month; may go to Disney

When I first read this I thought the title meant the contract would go to Disney to build the system...my first thought was "let's work on the monorails we already HAVE, please."

PHOTOS - Retail MagicBands take prominent position in Walt Disney World shops

The sad thing about this comment is the amount of people who will do exactly this, but they won't be joking... :P

    No more steam trains? (rumor)

A few of the guides for that tour have actually gotten together to write a letter to John Lasseter, asking that he talk to "higher-ups" and make sure they understand the importance of keeping live steam in the parks. They figure he's one of the few people who has the "pull" and also loves...

Work Tractor Collides with Monorail Lime

I'm happy to say pre-2009 I was asked to take a few trains back to shop "under pressure," meaning we were needing to get a broken train off quickly before fireworks or a parade dump. Usually this meant backing into shop and not "wasting time" switching ends at Magic Kingdom. I got such a kick...

Work Tractor Collides with Monorail Lime

The paint booth on Beam 10 is located at the entrance-end of Shop. If a train were pulled all the way into Shop, Car 1 would be in the paint booth, with the rest of the train farther into Shop. Normally they paint Car 1, then pull the train out, then paint car 2, etc. This is how pictures of...

Work Tractor Collides with Monorail Lime

So since it was Cab 1 that was damaged, I assume they will swap Cab 1 of Teal onto it. That means Cab 1 of Lime will be the original Cab 1 of Pink. It was sometimes strange for me to drive Teal Cab 1, knowing what those controls had been a part of.

    Automated monorail system update

Cab 1 of Teal is the old Cab 1 of Pink, and Cab 6 of Teal is the old Cab 6 of Purple. Peach has two brand new cabs. I was there the night Teal was first tested, and the paint job wasn't great and you could actually see the old colors in the door jams. And when someone would key the radio from...

    Automated monorail system update

Regardless of what happens with the automation, I will always take extreme pride in being able to say I was able to pilot all 14 different colors of Walt Disney World MkVI Monorails (and from all 24 cabs.) Despite the internal "drama" that led me to eventually leave the department, I will...
