There's kind of a paradox with the Villain's land concept. It is a flexible 'high concept' theme which Disney has moved away from for the domestic parks in favor of single IP lands, but not so flexible to enable a wide collection of IPs. The concept layouts released as part of the noise...

It's likely that all of the attractions in FantasySprings will remain unique to Tokyo. The TDS expansion is also designed to fill specific gaps in the attraction lineup at DisneySea. That attraction lineup doesn't, IMO, make sense for either a Disneyland or DCA expansion. I expect that Disney...

    All things Universal Studios Hollywood

Pokemon is a bit like Harry Potter in that a theme park translation won't be primarily about replicating the 'core mechanic' of the games, but about recreating environments from the games and the rest of the world, 'Pokemon centers' for example. A lot of the game lore is also based on Japanese...

New Tomorrowland @ Disneyland? Is this the year it finally gets announced? No, and that’s OK

I actually wouldn't include any of these in a criticism of TDL (Nemo would show up high on my list for TDS), because the real problem with that park is that much of it feels like the Magic Kingdom in 1985. As much as I wish TDL had seen more thoughtful updates over the years, I still prefer it...

Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

Possibly some cultural nuances being missed even with the translation. I'm sure Disney would like OLC to foot the bill on bringing Tiana (or equivalent) to Tokyo but it's ultimately up to whether there's a business case for it. As has been pointed out pretty often, it's just not there for TDL...

It'll almost certainly be rock work. TDS Mysterious Island has a similar on-stage bridge.

I expect 'park hopping' and whether people stay/leave the bubble are small considerations in Disney's thinking. It's an operational headache to screen people multiple times and you'll certainly going to do what you can to incentivize people to stay in the bubble/be screened in places that favor...

News Avatar Experience coming to Disneyland Resort

I think Disney doesn't especially care about capacity as long as average guest spend goes up. That's what matters to the bottomline. Do I think Avatar is a property that will do that? No, not especially. But I frequently have different views from Disney's accountants. As much as I want to agree...

BTMRR’s final lift TNT effect has been shut off intentionally

The mist effect is (I assume) mostly water vapor, which is transparent across big parts of the spectrum. Even if you placed the sensor directly behind the effect (why would you do that?), you shouldn't have any problems with false detections. Perhaps someone else knows more about intrusion...

    DisneylandForward

An observation that many people miss when talking about public transit - countries like Denmark and the Netherlands are much more pleasant places to drive because people have alternative options. Cars are great for a lot of things, but they shouldn't be the only option.

Why do you think people would be forced to do anything? Changing zoning to allow developers to build things that aren't single family homes just means allowing the market to build what people do want to spend on. There's no one advocating for forcing people out of single family neighborhoods or...

News Avatar Experience coming to Disneyland Resort

Disney has a mixed track record - at best - on prioritizing capacity. DHS is an obvious example of moving mainly laterally, but Star Wars Land at Disneyland traces its roots to efforts to add park capacity going back more than a decade. Even as a pure addition, it hasn't addressed the crowding...

News Avatar Experience coming to Disneyland Resort

I agree with you. I also don't think Disney management really understands (or perhaps more accurately - cares) what makes a theme park more than a random collection of attractions, and perhaps more importantly, shops and restaurants. It seems like they (for better or worse) are rewarded for that...

Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

A fun fact is that penguins sleep 11 hours a day, but rather than sleeping continuously, they take 'micro-naps' that last a few seconds each.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

I have similar feelings. I think Princess and the Frog could be the basis of a great attraction. From what's been shown so far, this just doesn't look to be it.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

Although my main criticism of GotG is that it replaced a classic attraction in a park that desperately needs them, I also find it a very poor use of the guardians IP. It only had a quick turnaround because almost nothing of substance was done in the conversion, leaving us with a disjointed mess...

    The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

I don't know where I'd put IOA relative to the WDW parks, but it's probably the clear best IP-based theme park, and I don't think it's especially close. Also agree that (up until EU, at least), Universal has avoided a lot of the 'soft product' problems that Disney has across the domestic parks...

    The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

Possibly off topic, but I've always found it interesting how much of DCA 1.0 was warmed over Disney's America. Grizzly Peak, Bountiful Valley Farm, Paradise Pier, Condor Flats were all pretty much direct lifts. How Disney missed a Sunset Blvd or a San Francisco Bay Area in the style of the TDS...
