On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

See, I think that the success of Hamilton is what will cause them to explore this idea. Hamilton has apparently overperformed relative to expectations. I'm guessing that opens the door for other Disney musicals to play this way, although it's just as possible that Disney+ has them on the basic...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

I completely agree that it's a lesser experience. However, two people would pay, what, 0.3% of the price for decent tickets to a Broadway show? And stuff like The Lion King and Frozen would have dramatic appeal. I'm not saying that I expect it to happen often, but I do think it's the sort of...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

I mean, I think that some would. Disney opens Pandora's box if it does that, though. Lucas would probably find it insulting, and they already face a delicate balance with him. If they could get Lucas onboard with it, I think they'd make more money making the movies free and thereby giving Star...

Well, they don't have to do that since it's already on the service. I do think that when Star Wars X or whatever it's called comes out in December of 2023, people will happily pay $29 to watch it in, say, January or early February of 2024 at home. This Mulan release sets the stage for that.

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

There's a bunch of unknowns here since digital sales remain a largely hidden subject. Thankfully, Disney is better than most at transparency. My point here is more than when a movie earns a billion dollars at the box office, the studio only earns a fraction of that, as referenced with Aladdin...

No, I just made a stupid math error because I'm too distracted by my cat asking for dinner. Yes, I meant 10 million/15 million. Thank you for the important correction. Now, if you'll excuse me, there's a tuna can I must open...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

Well, it certainly won't now, as China primarily reopened and managed a whopping $17 million for the weekend. However, back in March, most people involved in my industry felt strongly that as long as China didn't make an issue of Liu Yifei again, Mulan would perform better than any other...

And the metric goal is even smaller for Disney this way. When the studio releases a movie in theaters, it splits the take. By dropping this on Disney+, the company takes everything, which is why exhibitors are saying nasty things about Disney right now. Disney selling Mulan at $30 a pop...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

This circles back to the market's maturation. The Lion King earned $120 million in China despite being a lousy copy of the original. Name recognition carried that one, and it wasn't based on a Chinese legend. If I'd worked at Walt Disney Pictures, I would have pushed *hard* for Mulan due to its...

Giving the quants that much power was obviously a mistake, one that clearly irritates Iger to this day.

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

I follow this stuff for a living, and Mulan had a real chance to be Disney's biggest non-Marvel movie in China. It was probably going to break $1 billion in global revenue thanks to that one market. I think $800 million was its basement. That's why the studio had no interest in going straight...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

I've always thought that Eisner's decline stemmed almost entirely from the tragic death of Frank Wells, one of the most underrated Disney execs ever. He kept Eisner in check, and we saw what happened without that voice of reason whispering in his ear.

Part of it is that we're blurring terms. The Parks, Experiences and Products division dropped 85%, which is actually substantially better than SeaWorld, Universal, and The Oriental Land Company did. They were all around 95%. Still, Disney's Parks branch lost $1.96 billion. No amount of...

On layoffs, very bad attendance, and Iger's legacy being one of disgrace

Threads like this remind me of that old mail scam. A person mails a letter to 8,000 gamblers, claiming to know all the football scores. Half the letters say one team will win, and half say the other. In week two, the "winning" 4,000 letter recipients get another mail saying the same thing...

Yes, when we're staying a week or more, we always build in a buffer day, too. I couldn't do four days at Universal, though. After two days, I'm always raring to go back to the Disney Bubble.

Out of curiosity, how did you schedule your eight days? We usually take 10+ day trips like this when we're using DVC points, but we're doing 5 nights and then 4 nights instead, which is easier to plan.
