Is it possible they just uncovered something they were not expecting to have to repair due to wear, tear, and possibly whatever was done previously? As someone who's renovated an older home once upon a time I know this can sometimes make a seemingly small project balloon.

My vote is take whatever amount between 8 days worth and just enough fits easily in your bags. Then plan to do a limited amount of laundry midway just to ensure extras. This is what we normally do on all our trips. It has really cut down on the overpacking.
