Jim Henson Idea Man (Disney+ Documentary)

I hope they delve on what I think was Jim Henson's single greatest insight- chaos can be hilariously funny.

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Unfortunately, Disney will probably come to this conclusion: "Hmm, they don't like new characters. They want more sequels!"

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

In animation, I've often found that being a famous actor doesn't always translate to a good vocal performance. Classic Disney had the knack for casting just the right voice for the role. Even many Disney fans probably wouldn't know the names or faces of Bill Thompson, Cliff Edwards, Thurl...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I liked Hunchback and thought it was well done, but I think I may have rewatched it all but once since I originally saw it on its theatrical release. Its just not a fun movie.

Beatle's "Let It Be" Movie Restored on D+ May 8 '24

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly when it was released, but it was available on VHS during the 80s. It wasn't a particularly good film-to-video transfer, I distinctly remember the colors being rather dark and faded, and an overall grainy look (particularly compared to cleaned-up version of Help! that...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Saw it over the weekend. Meh. Not bad, but I had most of the opinions already shared with the others here. I feel like Magnifico needs a better movie. One thing I found interesting... many of the other castles that Disney uses in their parks and movies are based on amalgamations of actual...

    Crowd Noise During Pre-Shows

Same with me, or at least they had the decency to whisper. While watching a family video from the 80s a few years ago, it struck me that as my dad was filming the pre-show for Mission to Mars (because he filmed EVERYTHING!), not only can you hear the spiel perfectly, but you can actually see...

Taylor Swift merely showing up at a random location can apparently draw out the fans: https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/taylor-swift-the-black-whale-long-beach-island-beach-haven-nj/ I was actually an hour away in Ocean City at the time. A young couple in the house next door got into...

If I recall, all we ever got from the Black Cauldron was a quick-service snack bar.

I haven't heard anyone gloat about either failing, just the same people predicted both would flop (I haven't heard anything about Aquaman's box office performance yet, though).

    Bluey (on Disney+)

I haven't read a piece by that particular author in several years, but to call her a polemicist would actually be an understatement. She was known on Slate to find signs of the patriarchy anywhere she looked for them, and in one particularly mean-spirited and tasteless diatribe, she...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

If I hadn't known prior that he was in it, I would have missed his cameo. Owen Wilson and Danny Devito were in that film, though. Do you they still count as "A list"? LaKeith Stanfield has an Oscar nomination, so he couldn't have been extra cheap either. I liked that movie more than I...

Believe it or not, I got the reference before even reading the rest of the sentence. Pretty good airline.

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

To be fair, prior to seeing Little Mermaid for the first time, I wouldn't have expected the composer behind "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" had something like "Part of Your World" in him. But at least "Mean Green Mother" is a good song. Either I'm just too old and don't get it, or yes...

The second is also sort of a minor classic as well.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I don't know what it costs to make a movie (or what it should cost) but the audience simply isn't there (for the most part) anymore for the kinds of films Disney puts out that cost $200-300 million to make and 1-2x as much again to market.

If you're just dismissing all of it as "Culture War", then you're missing the point of much of the better criticism.

That's the way it was when I worked at a movie theater in the 90s. Only difference is that if the film didn't have legs, it would end up at Blockbuster as soon as possible. EDIT: I wonder what the age cut-off would be where a person wouldn't understand that second sentence?
