Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It’s 10(?) days until Mufasa opens. Guessing that’ll cannibalize some of Moana’s business assuming it gets similar or better reviews. (Moana 2 is down to 62 on RT and, less of a general audience metric but still telling, 2.9 on Letterboxd).

Yall catch that Barry Jenkins interview where he basically said Mufasa taught him CGI moviemaking “isn’t his thing”? Plus he says he took the job so he could work in LA and get paid. Weird things to say on a promotional tour.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Considering how weak the Oscar race is this year, there’s a chance that a more ambitious-riskier Inside Out sequel might’ve become the first animated Best Picture winner. Not that Disney would trade that for the box office…

That image is hilarious. Late capitalism, baby!

Dunno if it was posted already but Snow White’s budget is $240M according to Variety.

So they’re making live-action Moana (when’s that open?) and Moana 3. I guess when you stop successfully introducing new franchises you have to keep going back to the well. Suppose they’re cashing out in 2024 while they still can.

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

The 40s anthology flicks have some of the most inventive and imaginative animation the Walt studio ever produced, not to mention memorable music. They’re almost like Fantasia without the pretentiousness.

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Funny how many casual reviews compare this to the Eisner direct-to-video sequels. Have to think if that was now, Cinderella 2 and Lion King 3.5 or whatever would’ve all gotten theatrical releases because IP sequels are the cornerstone of Disney’s brand today.

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Yep, same A- audience score as Wish but it’ll be a cash cow because it’s an IP sequel. Will be interesting to see if Mufasa’s business is affected at all by this.

Is it too late for a Wicked land to be added to Epic Universe for opening day?

Why are you concerned at all, man? Dis warriors never let mediocrity stop them from brand hyping.

    Lilo and Stitch live-action remake

Gonna be real sad when the family movie genre craters next year

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Why do you suppose Moana was visually designed for scope?

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Interesting that Moana has a widescreen aspect ratio. Moana 2 is a boxier 2.00:1. Not surprising, I guess, considering the television series genesis of the sequel.

There’s a sizable number of reviews on Letterboxd if you want to keep your expectations low.

Certainly feels like Wicked is going to have word of mouth on its side. My nearly-full theater applauded at the end. Ariana Grande has an irresistible energy, and that’s coming from someone who found the CGI/digital look unappealing and the songs less than catchy.

News MuppetVision 3-D's Future: Potential Disney Park Venues and Vision Pro Immersive Experience

The funny/sad thing about this is WDI hasn’t come close to creating a more entertaining and more humorous show in the past 30+ years. A statement on their show writers as much as anything.

Live-Action ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’

Gadot is clearly walking away with the movie based on the marketing. Last bit of the trailer feel like a repeat of Wish. 2025 is looking like it’ll be closer to 2023 for Disney.
