News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

OK, I expect this take to be roundly dismissed by all sides, but I’ve always assumed that Disney never expected the DA and RC’s to survive this fight. They were guaranteed to force a direct conflict right out of the gate, and maybe that was the point. They could wait for dozens of minor...

News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

A lot of the DeS fans are out there on social media claiming complete victory over Disney, but here’s an opinion from the flip side: https://abovethelaw.com/2024/03/ron-desantis-disney-settlement/ Which reminds me that I meant to ask whether anyone here can opine about the water permit...

Probably because there was no possible deal to be had that didn’t give DeS the ability to claim victory on paper. The rest will come later in the negotiated agreements that will get little to no press.

Did they commit to that? (I'm honestly asking, because I don't know.) They did make some changes to the regs a while back, but I think those basically amounted to declaring themselves supreme rulers of all they surveyed. IIRC they amended an outdated version that didn't include the last RCID...

To start with? Lots on conniving with a bunch of people who don’t want to find themselves and their phones added to the discovery list.

So many thoughts that I haven't properly organized yet, but my take: I get that on paper this looks like Disney folded on everything, but IMHO the things that Disney lost here had already been lost. Even assuming some eventual version of a win in court, the DA has been void (or at best on...

You may be right. I’m certainly not coming to any conclusions about normal practices based on the prior actions of this Board 😂

I don't know what the general practice would be in this situation, but they did include the Employment Agreements for Classe and Gilzean in the May 10/23 Packet.

It doesn't, however, contain a copy of the Employment Agreement they're being asked to approve. On the other hand, there's nothing in the packet to suggest a broader search for candidates, so at least there's kind of some transparency about the decision being based solely on the governor's...

News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

Sorry, I was just pointing out that sometimes governments do things that are clearly contrary to statute, such as ignoring the residency requirements of Board members in the Gainesville example (I take no position at all on the statute itself, or the operation of the utility before or after the...

I agree that such actions should be unlikely to survive constitutional challenge (based on my extremely limited and vague understanding of the law). But you can cause a lot of chaos while lawsuits make their way through the courts and, however it turns out, Disney essentially ends up paying all...

News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

My (completely uninformed) guess is that the Governor and the District would never settle in the traditional sense. I'm watching for who DeS puts on the Board to replace Garcia, and how that person & his pick to replace Gilzean move forward. That pick is very much part of the DeS world, but...

They updated it to change the wording 👀 8.1 Board Consideration of Request from Stephanie Kopelousos to serve as District Administrator. They’ve also added a closed session to discuss the 3 court cases involving Disney. (BTW: this version of the agenda doesn’t include the “Informational...

Direct links to the individual filings don’t usually work, but you can find everything on the court’s site: https://myeclerk.myorangeclerk.com/ Choose the search for “Civil Case Records”. I usually search business name “Walt Disney” for anything filed after May 1/23. Currently that will show...

No idea whether Gilzean hired him directly or the district hired him to represent Gilzean. Here’s the list of lawyers at this guy’s firm: https://burkegroup.law/our-team/

But then there's this one from the link on the separate Meeting Page: https://www.oversightdistrict.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/BOS-Meeting-03-27-24-Agenda-Final.pdf which includes this: 8. NEW BUSINESS 8.1 Consideration of Employment Agreement with Stephanie Kopelousos for District...

I really liked how the affidavits say they have no unique and personal knowledge about the district’s responses to public records requests because (they essentially assert) they each did their best to personally identify and disclose the records from their personal devices.
