One Sentence Competition - Season 3 Episode 2

Hello, fellow Armchair Imagineers!
Welcome back to Season 3 of the One Sentence Competition! ​

For those of you who don't know, the One Sentence Competition is a fun, casual competition. There are no eliminations and no large time commitment involved. You can drop in or drop out at anytime and most prompts should not take very long.

I'm your host for episode 2 which will have about 10 prompts over roughly two months. Each prompt will involve some sort of imagineering challenge. Some examples from the last episode were to create a new parade at Walt Disney World outside of Magic Kingdom or to create a new seasonal festival for EPCOT. This episode will be similar, but with a new theme:

This competition is built on simplicity. Your responses can only be 1-3 sentences long and can only include 1 picture (though providing no pictures is perfectly fine too!). No videos or websites either. There will be a bonus on each prompt that you can use an additional 1 sentence to respond to. The bonus is mostly for fun, but may be used for things like a tie breaker if two submissions are very good.

Each response will receive a short review with encouragement and constructive criticism. Then, the top three will receive bronze (1 point), silver (2 points), and gold (3 points) medals. Whoever has the most points at the end of the episode gets Armchair Imagineering bragging rights, and maybe another small special surprise.

The competition aspect really isn't the focus though. This is meant to just be a fun time. Simple enough for new comers, but rewarding enough for veterans. A great way to start in the imagineering forums, to relax a bit between bigger competitions, or just to have a good time and use your imagination a bit!

Episode 2 begins Monday, April 10th (04/10/17).

I'll be posting one practice prompt soon to make sure everyone understands the format. Plus, ANYONE that makes a submission to the practice prompt receives 1 point right off the bat!

If you're interested, just reply so that we can get a list of folks I can mention in the thread before each challenge. But remember, there is no need to sign up ahead of time if you don't want because you can jump in and out at will!​

Practice Prompt

Lagoon of Doom

-Scenario-

It has been one strange day at EPCOT. While helping a guest off one of the friendship boats in the World Showcase Lagoon, a cast member slipped on the dock and splashed into the water! A medic was called to check on the cast member, and they noticed something strange: the water in the lagoon had been contaminated with chemicals! The only immediate solution that Walt Disney Management is considering is to completely drain the lagoon...

-Challenge-

Armchair Imagineers, your challenge is to describe what can eventually be done to seamlessly and permanently replace the World Showcase Lagoon at EPCOT! Be as realistic or unrealistic as you want on this one, it is just a practice to get those imagineering skills going.

-Rules-

You may use between 1 and 3 sentences and up to 1 picture. If this was a regular prompt, the deadline would be Saturday (4/1) at midnight (most prompts will be given a little less than a week). Since 4/1 is April Fool's Day (and this is just a practice prompt), there is no real deadline. Feel free to submit all the way up to the posting of the first real prompt on 4/10. This is just for fun, but remember, if you participate in the practice prompt you get to start episode 2 with 1 point!

-Bonus-

No bonus for the practice. In the real game this will be an extra fun addition to the challenge.

-Tips-

K.I.S.S - Keep it simple, silly. Try not to over complicate or over think things too much. It's a simple, casual competition. Focus on the big picture. Don't miss the forest for the trees. All that good stuff.

-Judging Criteria-

Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

After the chemical nightmare of 2017, the World Showcase Lagoon was drained, filled in and permanently paved over with a relocated It's a Small World attraction placed at its center. The outer rim of the lagoon footprint will be left a wide path for a daily Nations Parade to make a partial loop around the showcase. The remainder of the space in between the parade path and IASMW will be located a wealth of park like seating and gardens and a full relocation of all temporary food huts, exhibits, etc that currently line the World Showcase walking path for events like the flower and garden festival allowing the countries to be free of some clutter and also consolidating the fairs into a more central space.

Journey to the Center of the W̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ ̶S̶h̶o̶w̶c̶a̶s̶e̶ Earth - Part Deux​

In the process of draining the World Showcase lagoon, local construction workers encountered a number of previously unknown anomalies, including: a series of caverns and aquifers, a derelict submarine base (occupied by a rusted over Nautilus), and the prominence of a hitherto submerged volcano - the legendary Mystery Island. This Tokyo Disney Sea "clone" serves as a new take on a fan favorite, mixing in the local topology and wildlife into the old ride queue (think aquifers and gators), as guests journey to the center of the Earth - where they would be wise to take care, as Epcot's resident lava monster is "chemically enhanced" when compared to the original.

An outpost will be added to each country, detailing the history of a famous volcano, mountain, or story about reaching the center of the Earth from its respective culture (Mt. Fuji for Japan, Pompeii for Italy, the Jules Verne story for France), to help unite the volcano - which will also play a role in Epcot's new Illuminations replacement - with the surrounding World Showcase.

Lagoon of Time:

During the Chemical incident of 2017, Disney realized that it had struck gold, in a way that could reduce demolition costs, and add an attraction. From now on, departing where the friendship boat docks are, guests will board glass bottom boats, as they look down into the acidic waters that house the rotting, and breaking down, relics of Disney past. This solution allows for them to save money, and profit on nostalgia on the "Tours of our past" Attraction.

Replacing the World Showcase lagoon will be EPCOT Tower. A large complex complete with a hotel, green space, restaurants, an observation deck, a convention center permanentaly occupied by a Big Hero 6 Style Science fair (sponsored by CalTech). This will make EPCOT more true to its original vision of a community and offer plenty of space for expansion within the various lower levels of the tower.

In a tribute to both the 1964 World's Fair, and the spirit of World Showcase, the suddenly hazardous World Showcase Lagoon has been drained and filled with a central promenade that pays homage to one of the inspirations behind the area of the park. Moving it's a small world and the creation of the Ford Skyway, the center of World Showcase will be a permanent/makeshift Food and Wine Festival, in that -- even countries not seen around World Showcase with a specific pavilion, will have the opportunity to be on display in "World's Square "- the center of all the action in the sub-land "Legacy of the World"

Overall, the Legacy of the World will unite all of the pavilions together, and be the host to a dazzling fireworks display coming from the icon of the area, a large steel globe, showing unity of the planet and all nations on one earth together (the name of the show will be "One Earth" - a tribute to all of the nations that populate this magnificent planet).

Review

Well, I've got to say as a first response this is pretty perfect. You add room to make a parade possible. You added in Small World which is a perfect fit in my mind. And then in the extra space you have park/forest/path area that can be used for the festivals, and maybe even themed to the outdoors of each country it is near? Great stuff. If I have to pick out some criticisms, then I have two. First, I'm not sure how Disney would feel about moving a classic Fantasy land attraction in IASW to Epcot. Second, although this hits all of the right (some may say perfect) notes, it maybe isn't the most creative idea.

Review

This is just a great idea. Center the area on a truly great attraction, add some descriptions about the queue and theming, and fit it in with some Florida history and you get a true winner of an idea. You even tied it into the chemical spill of the prompt! Moving on to the Outposts, guests get to truly immerse themselves in the backstory of the ride. So now my worry. In my head this is such a great idea, but then you realize that you have just turned that massive lake into only one single attraction. That could work, but you've added a new outpost to each country focusing solely on tying it into that one attraction. I think you may have accidentally shifted the focus of the back half of Epcot away from a World Showcase and to more of a "Journey to the Center of the Earth" Showcase. I feel like this may take away from the original dream of the park.

Creativity: 10/10
Realism: 6/10
Theme: 10/10
