I think Woody is incorrect. I think you have to have reservations.
Sometime back in 2004 (best I recall), they relocated the California Grill check-in podium to the second floor of the resort in order to keep out the people that just wanted to view the fireworks show. I personally don't enjoy any of the WDW fireworks shows and I don't waste my time viewing any of them.

Anyway, guests that have advanced reservations for the California Grill and those guests that just desire to enjoy the California Grill lounge are escorted to the elevator that takes them up to the 15th floor. I don't eat at the California Grill because I don't eat large meals. My general constitution does not allow me to eat large meals, so I eat many small meals each day. Fruits and vegetables are my main foods with a turkey leg once in awhile! :slurp:

I don't drink hard liquor, but I do drink beer and sometimes I'll drink some wine. I have often headed up to the California Grill lounge for a few drinks and a little snack, including the sushi bar. I have never made an advanced reservation and I have never been turned away. My last trip was earlier this year and I had no problem.

I think the CM's at the check-in podium are most likely experienced enough to recognize the "fireworks fanatics" and keep them in check.

We have also had no problems going to the bar and not have dinner at CG. We also enjoy having a lighter meal of sushi or flat bread. Yes, they do make you wait at the check in area, but have always let us up.
