News Disney partners with Epic Games to launch gaming and entertainment universe tied to Fortnite

Hey, there's no harm in explaining why this is a bad deal! :p
Hey, as someone who has only a vague sense of what Fortnite is, I found your post very informative and interesting!

I appreciate when people who actually know something about a subject post from their experience with it, as opposed to those whose M.O. is just to make vague allusions to nothing in a vain attempt to seem like they have some insight...

according to Alex Heath on The Town with Matt Belloni, Disney executives are looking into acquiring Epic Games outright 🤔

relevant segment starts at 14:55 into the video and ends at 22:48

This is what I was waiting for. Ever since Disney shut down its gaming studio(s), they’ve missed out on some big opportunities and their licensed games have been hit or miss.

I think people who haven’t played a lot of Fortnite and it’s various game modes don’t really understand, but it has been one of the biggest, most lucrative games in history, and Disney’s IP tie-ins have been very successful.

A Disney Infinity-style game mode could be awesome.

Unfortunately, I think layoffs at Fortnite are AI-related. But it may provide a unique opportunity for Disney.

Unreal Engine would also be a game-changer (no pun intended) for ILM, the studios and the parks 👀

i think an acquisition like that would make sense and would better position Disney as the technology-forward company D'Amaro has mentioned as one of his priorities as CEO

I am wondering if Epic might be looking to unload Fortnite but retain Unreal. In that case, I don’t think it’d be a good move for Disney to only buy Fortnite.

But yeah, I think it would fit with what Josh has said he wants to pursue. I could see them exploring some application to Disney+, too.

As a company, this has been my greatest concern. Disney+ has given them an anchor, but they need to be ready for the next catastrophe that can take the destination markets out of play (Parks, Cruises, Cinema). Gaming is the one asset they lack that will help them weather any storm.

I’m sure this has likely already been said, but while I think this could have huge benefit for Disney, especially with the Unreal Engine, it does have me worried a bit. There seems to be a trend with Disney and buying out gaming companies, only for that company’s major leading game to die out, be shut down, or the entire company to be closed within a few years. One of the most primary examples that comes to mind is with Club Penguin. Then finally, they put the nail in the coffin with the shutdown of Disney Interactive.
I trust Josh, with his seeming excitement and pursuit of all this, but a bit concerning also 😅.

agreed! Fortnite by itself really only has meager value compared to Epic Games as a whole, and i don't think that tiny bit of value is what Disney should be pursuing - if they do this (and there's no guarantee that they will), it should be the whole Epic enchilada.

this is definitely valid (rip VMK 😞), it's a gamble for sure because Disney hasn't had a strong foothold in the gaming sphere since the early 2010s, so the acquisition of Epic Games could either bring a new renaissance of Disney gaming, or another shuttered game studio and more licensed games in the future. from what he's said in interviews, D'Amaro seems less risk-averse than Iger was so he might be more willing to take gambles like this, but we'll have to see if that talk translates to action.

ultimately i see major potential here and i hope Disney is smart enough to make the jump, even if they don't stick the landing, because if they get it right it could be a Disney+-level addition to the company. and i really hope that D'Amaro can learn when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em, so to speak, because Disney needs someone at the helm who isn't afraid to take risks.

Epic isn't in any danger of going defunct as long as Unreal Engine remains the gold standard for other game developers -- they can just rake in the licensing fees for games produced by others.

But their attempts to broaden have been hit or miss at best. They tried to take on Steam as a gaming store and that's apparently been a disaster.
These are great points. Epic is essentially Fortnite + UE. As for the former asset, it’s a diminishing one and efforts to broaden it to other areas has been pretty unsuccessful. You have to give them credit - the main Fortnite game has had incredible durability.

All that said, if you love the innovations the UE affords you’d better hope Disney doesn’t acquire Epic. They have a horrendous track record in the game space.

Well said and all valid points 👏👏👏

I think if Disney especially got a good handle on the Unreal Engine, we’d see some true new hits that would dominate for a while, granted they play their cards right.

Based on things D’Amaro has said previously, with the hopes to make this collaboration (or now, ownership?) a huge part of the brand, integrated with other integral aspects such as the parks and streaming, it gives me hope that they not only have a clear end goal, but working (wisely) through the steps to achieve it.

Again, as others have said, Disney doesn’t exactly have a good track record in the game space 😬. But here’s hoping for innovation and growth!

Hey, Perplexity, of the top 20 video games ranked on scores from revues, or numbers of players, or financial success in the past 10 years were built on Unreal Engine?

If you mean “among top-ranked games from the last 10 years, which were built on Unreal Engine,” the answer is: many of them were, especially in the highly rated and best-selling categories. Clear examples from the sources I found include Fortnite, Rocket League, PUBG / PUBG Mobile, Gears 5, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Bioshock Infinite, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Ark: Survival Evolved.vanas+1youtubethegamer

What I can verify

  • Fortnite is explicitly described as built on Unreal Engine and as a major revenue success.becomecgpro+1
  • Rocket League is listed among Unreal Engine games and was a major commercial hit.reddityoutubebecomecgpro
  • PUBG and PUBG Mobile appear in Unreal Engine game lists and are also among the most-played games by player counts.wikipedia+1
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake, Gears 5, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice are also identified as Unreal Engine games in the sources I found.youtubebecomecgpro
  • Older but still top-tier critical/commercial successes like Batman: Arkham Knight and Bioshock Infinite were also built on Unreal Engine.fandom+2

Short answer

So, yes — a substantial share of the top 20 games by reviews, player counts, or revenue from roughly the last decade were built with Unreal Engine.

It's also a dated engine just like Unity and Steams Source/Source2 engine. Kind of myopic view of the world ignoring things like s&box which was just released as free to use for developers on Steam. Past performance doesn't necessarily translate future success no matter how successful it may have been. Disney has a increasingly poor reputation as a scatological midas for acquired properties.

As someone who does game dev in my free time using the UE5 engine and loves Disney stuff, PLEASE do not buy UE5/Epic Games as whole. The engine right now has to be some osrt of a loss leader to make it free and I don't think that would fly for long. I love it as an engine and don't think it would survive well under a company that just doesn't know the space.
