MK New Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Updates Coming to Walt Disney World

Just wanted to pop in and give my thoughts on what's been shown so far.

Really like the physical changes to the ride. First scene with the training robot is well done, though I do miss the disco ball.

Zurgs voice sounds much better now! UV lighting seems to be more polished than it did look before! Always a plus! I do like some well done UV.

Buzz's voice is a bit here and there. Sounds really good in some places, but very off in others.

Music sounds very dull and generic now though. Glad they kept the Theremin sting element when Buzz announces Zurg in the queue though! If they wanted to give it new music, just use Astro Blasters.

All in all, aside from Buzz's voice and The Music, it seems like a solid upgrade! Nice!

I seem to recall a time in the previous version where Tim Allen came in and recorded Buzz Lightyear’s dialogue. Did they not do that for this new dialogue? And if not, why not? You’d think they would just have him record it while working on Toy story 5.

Listening to the dialogue on loop I think it is Tim Allen. If you watch interviews of Tim Allen from the past few years when he’s speaking his natural tone he sounds gravely and a bit raspy like Buzz on the ride. While when he speaks with real energy he sounds identical to how he sounded 30 years ago which is also like Buzz on the ride.

Tim Allen never voiced Buzz in any iteration of this ride. He may have done Buzz's voice for the Peoplemover but I'm not sure. I'm sure that having Tim Allen record lines for this ride would require different sorts of contracts, payments, etc. I don't think they can just say, "Hey, while your here for Toy Story 5, can you do this for us as well?"

Oh it would be built into his contract. This is done often nowadays.

Tim Allen is definitely Buzz on Midway Mania! He's done a lot of recent projects as Buzz so it kind of surprised me they didn't get him for the ride. My understanding is that generally they offer a project to the original voice actor first, and depending on the pay they might then pass it down to a soundalike.

I guess that makes sense. With Disney, they have their hands on so many projects that these contracts might encompass more than just one project a lot of the time.

That's a good point. If he did the voice of Buzz for Midway Mania and Toy Story Land, I'm surprised he wouldn't voice Buzz in this ride. It's Buzz's very own ride after all. My guess is that the budget was just much, much lower for this refurb compared to Midway Mania, so they couldn't get him to do it.

Now that it's less than a week out, should we assume the previews for the 29th are no longer happening? I won't be there yet anyway but if the ride is ready to go I struggle to understand why they would keep it closed until the 8th. Hoping for at least some soft opening time in the first week of April.

If he wanted to do it, he would have done it. Most Disney voice actors are quite territorial when it comes to their voice being used over others, especially with in-park projects. Tim is at a different level as to what he can/should demand though, even for something that takes probably a few hours at most.

There are still some previews happening on 29, so stay tuned.

Looks like they’re taking music from the cartoon

So that song is not originally from the cartoon. It was a hidden track on the Woody's Roundup album by Riders in the Sky. It just happened to be rearranged for the credits of the direct-to-video movie. They also use a little instrumental arrangement of that song in the queue for Toy Story Mania.

I’ve been on the new version. It’s an improvement. I like it a lot.

Also did the post-ride survey.

You have to hit the black dot in the middle of the target to score points. Exactly in the middle. It’s harder than it sounds.

Target values depend on the color of the outside ring, I think:
  • Black/plain = normal value
  • White
  • Rainbow
  • Video = highest value

The vehicle ahead of us had someone from WDI riding with a laptop and looking at targets. We may have stopped once for someone to adjust something too.

I'm assuming we're in the early early stages of whatever "test & adjust" phase comes with CM previews.

Moving images around the outside of the target, yeah.
I assume you're also calling it "media"?
