Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I love watching the Oscars but I away fast forward pass the acceptance speeches. They are too political.

The change is remarkable, because they seem to be trying to sabotage their own industry and its biggest night.

The data is most telling.

While the country added 80 Million citizens the last 30 years, the show lost over two thirds of its viewership. And relevancy.

1996 - 45 million viewers = 17% of US population
2006 - 36 million viewers = 12% of US population
2016 - 34 million viewers = 10% of US population
2026 - 18 million viewers = 5% of US population 😨

They also do themselves no favors by nominating niche movies that few people have ever seen for Best Picture, Best Actress, Actor, Director, etc.

In 1998 the Oscars was celebrating perhaps the last great American blockbuster, Titanic, and the viewership for that show boomed as America tuned in to see if Titanic and its stars would take home the statues. They did, and America tuned in!

1998 - 57 Million viewers = 20% of US population

If not for this website I still wouldn’t know the opinions, beliefs or private lives of the celebrities.

I know their work and that’s it. You kind of have to go looking (and also care) if you’re going to avoid over a dozen celebrities because of ideology.

I still don’t understand why anyone cares what they think or say.

I do.

I don’t want to put more money in Mel Gibson’s pocket, or encourage him to make more movies.

I do.

I don’t want to put more money in Mel Gibson’s pocket, or encourage him to make more movies.

This is my take also, I don’t intentionally look for a reason to dislike someone but once you know certain things about their personal life it makes it very hard to support some of them. That’s true of normal businesses also, you just don’t see much coverage about Joe who owns the hardware store like you do with celebrities.

I have never eaten at Jimmy John’s because 20 years ago the owner was on the news for big game hunting, I’m pretty sure he sold it years ago and I still won’t go there because I still associate it so heavily with something I don’t want to support.

When you make your private life public you risk alienating people. The more extreme your private life the more people you tend to alienate.

Third weekend for Hoppers, and yet The Numbers site is still not back to its old self.

But some of their new features are starting to come on line, including this new Weekend Preview feature. It's showing that Project Hail Mary from Amazon will debut in first place, and Hoppers will pull in about $18 Million for its third weekend out.

Sorry to say, Numbers will never be back to its "old self". They have decided to upgrade the site to new technology some of which is not compatible with some of their old features as they have stated on their main page. So some of those old features you like may never come back.

This may be the new normal, so might as well get used to it.

So far I'm liking what I see. The new graphics and formatting they've chosen is a really nice upgrade.

I don't need much from them; just current box office stats, and historical data on past movies, which I'm sure they'll still provide. And if they can automatically adjust it for inflation, that's a huge bonus. They're working on it, that's for sure.

I can only imagine how many late night pizzas and cases of beer those kids have ordered in the past two weeks! 🍕

Their new way of showing how a debut movie could/should perform at the box office is incredibly helpful! This one is for Project Hail Mary, and sadly they were deep into their rebuilding phase when Hoppers came out so they didn't have it for that Pixar release.

But this sort of pre-opening summary from The Numbers will make for interesting conversation this summer when we get to Burbank's big budget tent poles.

That isn't a "new way" of showing the potential performance of a debuting movie, they've always done that. It was just always buried on the site. Now that all the other features are not available its more front and center so now you notice it.

Anybody see an official budget for Ready or Not 2, latest range I’ve gotten is between $6-20M

The first one was done for $6M and the second iteration was similarly shot in 30 days to keep costs down.

This Collider piece says $14m. Not sure where they've pulled that figure from, as I don't think I've seen anything more specific than "less than $20m" anywhere else.

At today’s Next on Netflix press event, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria made a distinction: “There is Warner Bros theatrical distribution, and then there’s Netflix, which we’ve been in a different business. I don’t want you to conflate the two. Ted was talking about Warner Bros being in a different business than what Netflix is in.”

An indirect acknowledgement their agreement to the exclusivity window was externally pressured than an internal shift. I’m really watching out for K-Pop 2. If they do not exclusively put that in theatres, they simply do not believe in its model.

Agreed, I’m well documented here saying I didn’t believe they had a change of heart on theatrical, and this sort of confirms that.

What did you think? We saw it Thursday night. I guess it was entertaining, but kind of meh.
I'm a fan of the book and I really enjoyed the movie. I thought Rocky was done very well. He wasn't annoying like Grogu has become. It is a little long but it was good scifi. Ryan Gosling played it with a lot of heart and humor. If you liked the Martian, you'll like this.

I saw Kiki's Delivery Service in 4k in the theater. It's one of the better Studio Ghibli movies from the late 80s. Great animation and good story. Fans of Disney animation would feel right at home.
Was considering this, was at my local 70mm IMAX. Hope they do more of this and constantly. No reason to not play Alien or Curse of the Black Pearl or Gone with the Wind in IMAX, if possible. Worth the restoration for the films that haven’t!

In other news, actual good writing wins box office returns! Team behind Spider-Verse once again proving they ARE some of the filmmakers to beat right now. Disney, take note!

I’d say the tracking long-term is modest by this poster. I’d expect strong word of mouth and continued domination of premium formats giving it nutty legs.

Easy $600M+ grosser, and it’ll do numbers on UHD Blu-ray sales and crazy viewership on Prime Video.

Plus, it’s forever a “prestige” movie that will become a classic and they’ll own the film IP forever.

That’s borderline priceless.
