scene upgrade...View attachment 912502View attachment 912503
I have memories of their being a little bit of fog/smoke coming out of the volcano but upon inspection at 1998 footage of the ride, I only see lights, no fog.So I’m just now noticing this….there are two props with pictures of Zurg, except they’re not supposed to be mere pictures - they’re representing Zurg speaking to you via video message. One is the floating monitor in the first scene (“join me to defeat Buzz Lightyear!”), and the second is the Zurg-O-Vision just before the first animatronic Zurg. I think those were missed opportunities to install small video projections of an animated Zurg talking to you in place of those paintings. Would help to make the ride less cheap, in my opinion.
Other than that, this looks pretty good. The new escape hatch scene doesn’t have much going on but I’d take it over that featureless black tunnel. Also the smoke blowing out of the volcano - was that always there? It’s pretty neat.
The smoke in the volcano is brand new and there never has been smoke coming out of the volcano directly. There used to be a fog machine in the room (and in the Escape Hatch tunnel, the machine being turned off is the reason it looked so bad for so long). Disney moved away from fog machines around ~2005ishI have memories of their being a little bit of fog/smoke coming out of the volcano but upon inspection at 1998 footage of the ride, I only see lights, no fog.
The soundtrack was a huge loss. I will genuinely pay someone to find the entire original soundtrack in high quality and share it online. Technically, the whole thing is already available online but only bits and pieces of it are of listenable quality. A lot of it is super crunchy and low quality recordings of it.overall an improvement i think! the ride feels slightly more "lively" for lack of a better term. the new buzz and zurg voices will definitely be distracting to people who know the ride well at first, but i think it'll just take some getting used to. i think buddy gives the opening scene more of a purpose in the overall story instead of a generic tutorial kind of thing it was before, so that's a plus to me. the artwork being plussed is a huge improvement! the aliens looked way off-model originally which gave them a kind of carnival ride feel, so i'm glad they were touched up and improved.
the one thing i wish was done differently is the music. it seems kind of generic aside from the toy story 2 score in the speed tunnel? the original ride soundtrack was a bit repetitive with the theremin version of strange things over and over so i'm glad they changed it, but i think they could have took a page from astro blasters in the music department.
yeah epic fail on the soundtrack, I'm getting irked with Disney using generic music more and more all over the place. Someone...I don't know what they were thinking here......... Everything though looks fantastic and well done physically. But the music a complete bore and useless. It was always so upbeat, zippy and fun even if repetitive. The soundtrack was a huge loss. Changing to the DL style untethered blasters would have been enough to please me, I couldn’t hit anything with the old ones so it always drove me crazy. The updated scenes are a huge bonus too though. It still looks cheaper than ever - so a lateral move at most with better gameplay, which will be nice.
Still think Disneyland's version looks nicer.

Basically this is 'plussing' the ride.. something Disney had built a great reputation for.. and unfortunately for this ride, skipped over for so long. Great to see Disney doing this plussing again (Buzz, Frozen, etc)
I may copy and paste this comment in threads about several different attractions at WDW...I just want to know if they took care of the mold infestation staining all the walls and ceilings. Many of the props were covered with it too, so I'm curious how extensive that cleaning and repainting process was as well.
