Very sad news. I got to know Jeff before he became involved with RunDisney.
Jeff was very well known here in Atlanta. Jeff was the winner of the inaugural Atlanta Peachtree Road Race (10K) in 1970, and very active in the Atlanta area (two Phidippides shoe stores, numerous running events, member of the Atlanta Track Club, etc.). And, some people may recall that Jeff was also an Olympian (1972) in the 10k run.
I met Jeff in 1992 when he was the RD for the Atlanta Corporate Challenge (5k run/walk). I was the team captain for a running team from Hewlett-Packard. Back then, the race was part of the Manufacturers Hanover series, with the World Championship event in NYC. In the early days of the Atlanta event we would pick up the running bibs from Jeff's garage or sometimes from his Phidippides shoe stores. I was laid off from HP 10 years later and missed doing the race for several years. Then, I became captain for a team at my new place of work and went to a team captain meeting and Jeff remembered me - very impressive.
I used Jeff's book, Marathon, for my training to compete in the 2000 Ironman California. I used the "Galloway" with run/walk intervals to go from 10k distance up to the 26.2 marathon distance. And, even though I stick to shorter distance triathlons now, I still run the "Galloway" with run/walk intervals. So, Jeff's legacy will live on for me, as long as I am running.
