DHS Disney Animation-Inspired Experience Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Can we not pretend like those classes were stuffed either? They were mostly empty when I went to the ones at Rafikis
they were packed at Rafikis when I was there last, but I have no idea if that was normal or not.

Art Festival had good attendance for classes as well - naturally it doesn’t fill the entire amphitheater- I don’t think it was expected to.

I was just there a month ago and it was like maybe a few sparse people. Maybe like 15 total including my fiance and I? I prefer the live animator definitely but I would not claim it was "packed" by any means

This looks great.

I did one of the live-teacher drawing things. And it was... fine. Didn't have a clue who the live artist was. They perfunctorily went thru the motions of outlining a drawing of a Disney character.

And... that was it. No clever or funny or interesting banter with the live action artist.

I would have been more delighted if it were hosted by AA Olaf and there was a more famous artist even if they were prerecorded... going thru the motions just like the live-action artist did.

Kids will love Olaf, and the experience of drawing a Disney character. That, along with the M&G characters showing off the rest of movie production could be inspiring for them.

For a Disney adult drawing a crude outline of a Disney character....

...

Maybe they change their career and go to art school and get a job at an animation studio? <shrug>

Anyhoo... here's what I was prompted to draw once upon a time...

Man Hollywood Studios needs some new non E-ticket attractions...

*Disney adds them*

What?? This is bare minimum! I was expecting ATLEAST a fully new land with 5 new omnimover attractions that are not IP based at all about making movies! Horrible! Audio animatronics are obviously a dime a dozen now!

When I saw a reference to these details at another site, my immediate reaction was: an AA, actual animators hosting, plus all the other things at this location. Finally something that WDWMagic posters will be happy about!

I see I was wrong.

I think it sounds like great "filler" content at Hollywood Studios and very much on brand for the park. It will draw people, especially families and will help with some capacity challenges at the park. This space honestly felt utterly worthless prior.

I'm a fan of the short, so I'm excited to see what they do with building on that. I hope the execution is good, unlike the show replacement at Tree of Life, which I thought was absymal.

As it happens, I was also there last month and the class was full.

January is a generally a fairly slow month at WDW, esp AK. So much depends on the weather. Overall, the park was fairly quiet on the day I went because it was pretty chilly. I arrived to the park about 9:30am. Normally, I'd skip FoP at the hour, but the standby wait was only about 20minutes. I think it was posted 25, but the actual wait was only about 20min.

On the other hand, FoP was in bad shape. When the ride was over, everyone in my group said the ride was blurry. We mentioned this to a CM at the exit, and he said that is the state of the ride. Yet people are still paying $17-20 for FoP.

Well when I was last there it was literally full - at capacity. So that is what I would call “packed.”

But that was one visit to say goodbye to the goats a couple weeks ago. No idea if it was usually like that or not.

I do know it’s always got a line at DCA

Is it the bare minimum though? Not everything needs to be nor should be a gleaming E-ticket expansion. DHS needs attractions that will draw guests within the park without drawing guests to the park.

So far, this looks like a quality project that will do exactly that. In my opinion, refreshing tired spaces is the opposite of doing the bare minimum, which would be letting it be and doing nothing.

Furthermore, the experience fits perfectly in the theme of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, unlike The Animation Experience at DAK, which is an upgrade in and of itself.

See, when they first announced this, my reaction was something akin to "well, it will be better than Launch Bay, but probably nothing special". I think I did an animation class in the building eons ago and it struck me as perfectly fine filler but nothing special. I did like the film with Mushu though.

This to me is ending up being a lot more than expected. I'm not saying that anything individually is spectacular, but its a bunch of experiences that provides a nice compliment to rides and shows that already exist at DHS. Personally, I don't think it seems like much of a difference in having a live person vs a video teaching the animation since I'd expect it to be pretty structured regardless and it seems interesting to me that it's actual animators from Walt Disney Studios. I assume there will be at least some live CMs in the room who can help to answer questions and such even if they aren't actually teaching the class. I think Olaf interacting with the animators sounds more entertaining to me that the "standard" animation classes they've already had but YMMV.

The one thing I will add though is that while I think this sounds perfectly nice, I would rather have seen Animation demolished and a large new land added instead (with a connection to the RNR area). And the one downside I see with this development is that it probably pushes anything like that off for quite a few years - even though it would be the most logical next thing to address to help DHS.

Use the ignore feature and this board is much better, literally block out 4-5 posters and the entire board changes
Yes, I finally hit ignore on one grumpy person today and I think it will change a lot. And sadly, some people are intelligent and insightful, but the constant negativity and inability to have a conversation rather than just repeating their own narrow view just ruins these boards.

Call me overly optimistic but this would be a perfect place to introduce a Toontown behind through an entrance in the building similar to Harry Potter/London.

Never said it did.

I have higher expectations than you. I would even say, you almost have no expectations at this point.

It’s Tough to be a Bug was a heck of a lot more entertaining than plenty of shows with live performers. So is American Adventure. I could not care less about whether this experience has live performers or not. Live performers have done this experience for years at other parks. Time to try something new and not just duplicate the same tired experience. Talk about unimaginative.

Execution is what matters and nobody will convince me otherwise.
One consistent difference between live performers and pre-recorded attractions is that parkgoers tend to listen to live performers, but will often talk over recordings, especially when the recording sounds like a documentary.

Take Living with the Land, for example. Parkgoers interjected with questions while riding Living with the Land back when it had live CM's, but they listened to the response. Now, it is common to have parkgoers talking through the whole attraction about stuff has nothing to do with the attraction.

A on recent ride, everyone was treated to a (graphic) discussion of a fellow rider's gastrointestinal maladies. It was an odd choice.

You thought the boards would be happy about firing a live performer and replacing them with a tv screen?

I’m sorry, the enthusiasm for this attraction seems so insanely forced. It’s the most minor step up from Launch Bay imaginable and it will block development of this space for a decade or more. I’m excited for the AK changes. I think Villains has massive potential. But this? Frankly, I think a lot of the same posters would have made a lot of the same comments ten years ago about Launch Bay - “It’ll really liven up the dead Animation building!” “We’re getting a BB8 AA!” “MGM needs more things for families to do! They’ll love seeing Chewie!”

I have a sneaking suspicion you won’t see this, but is it your contention that positive posters make more substantive posts? It’s the critical posters who tend to write long, detailed examinations of where the parks are failing by drawing on evidence and experience while the positive posters tend very, very heavily towards passive aggression and “shut up, I like it.” Which of the positive posts in this thread do you feel really opens up space for a conversation?
