I got Escape! in the mail today! I haven't read it yet, but I got a signed copy. Stephen signed his first name, then drew a picture of a fish with an arrow pointing to the back instead of singing his last name. 😂

It's now my 5th Survivor autograph. The first non-winner. I also have Tony, Natalie, and Michele from when they signed shirts post Winners at War to raise money for Yul/Jonathan Penner and ALS. Then I also have a signed copy of Parvati's book.

Survivor 50 premieres one week from today! I'm excited!

Also, has anybody kept up with the nationwide idol hunt? I'm in Wisconsin, but the idol will be in Milwaukee, which is 2.5 hours away. I'm also close to Iowa, but theirs is 3.5 hours away. So no idol hunt for me. :(

The idol in Georgia was in the SE corner of the state, I'm in the NW - 6+ hours away. It has been interesting seeing the clues. The TN location was also too far away for me to be part of the fun.

On a separate note, I have been watching the daily Survivor clips that highlight season 50 cast. It really shows how stale Survivor has become post-covid. I miss the variety of different locations. I also miss the old non-fire formats in the final 3, the season start with race/fight to get supplies (jumping off the ship), and more variety of challenges.

I've watched some of the reruns they've been showing on CBS the past couple weeks, and the older seasons really do seem so different, simply because of the location and editing. Tocantins was so vastly different from Fiji. Exile in the desert ended up being another character on the season, which led to an iconic episode with Coach.

I'm hoping the fans voted for no fire making this season. And I agree about the maroonings. Just stepping off a boat isn't that exciting. In HvV, the flew in on helicopters. I miss them jumping off the ship to gather supplies, and then it would cause drama because they stole each other's things. The Pearl Islands opening sequence was iconic.

I've said before, I think how season 51 and 52 go will be really important for the show's future. If they flop, I could see a decline in viewership. If they are successful, it could boost the show for another 10 years. In order to avoid a flop, they have to reexamine the show. They tried to do it for the new era, but they took away so many things that made Survivor iconic and nostalgic. I think the "new era" could easily be transformed into the "budget era". It really is budget Survivor.

Is this season worth watching?

Have had a hard time getting back into the show after the 40th season was so good.
It hasn't aired yet, but I think it will be worth it. We haven't had a returnee season since 40, so it will be fun to see players come back. Half of the cast is pre-40, and half is post-40.

Another thing I thought of while watching tonight's Traitors episode... Survivor has lost its intensity. It shies away from social friction. The Traitors welcomes it. I'm not saying we need a Brandon Hantz-style meltdown. But Survivor was never intended to be an uplifting family program back in the day. Yes, families could watch it together, but vote outs used to feel personal. Now, it's so cordial. Sometimes it's like watching a board game. We need more heroes/villains edits. Not just gamers and quirky, eccentric characters. And villains don't have to be bad humans, but we need conflict. There is hardly any of that anymore.

If anyone is looking for a little fun add-on to this season, I have a "Survivor Fantasy League." Totally free, no prizes just a something to do each week (link above!).
1) you'll pick a sole survivor
2) you rank the contests in an order that you'd prefer, and then you'll get two of them for your "team" and earn points based off how they do each episode.
3) Then each week you wager up to 10 points per tribe for who you think is going home that episode.

I spotted the new Survivor book out in the wild today. The official release is this Tuesday. I skimmed through it.

It's a book of photos with almost no text. It's not a behind the scenes look at the show so much as it is a memento.

A few photos give a glimpse behind the curtain, such as shots that show the production crew. Most of the photos, whether candid or not, didn't strike me as revealing anything screen shots from the episodes would.

It's a nice souvenir for fans of the show, but doesn't offer any depth or insight beyond that.

We are two days away from the premiere! Which means it's time for me to make my winner predictions again. I choose a man and a woman each season, and I've gotten the past two seasons correct! I chose Kyle for 48 and Savannah for 49 (and I didn't remember Savannah was the mystery female for 50). Here are my picks from past years:

31 - Vytas
32 - No winner pick
33 - M: Adam, F: Figgy
34 - M: Malcolm, F: Andrea
35 - Winner: Ashley, Runner-Up: Desi
36 - M: Brendan, F: Kellyn
37 - M: Dan, F: Alison
38 - Returnee: Kelley, Newbie: Victoria
39 - M: Tommy, F: Molly
40 - M: Jeremy, F: Parvati
41 - M: Ricard, F: Sara
42 - M: Hai, F: Chanelle
43 - M: Jesse, F: Elie
44 - M: Matthew (medevac backup: Yam Yam), F: Helen
45 - M: Jake, F: Sabiyah
46 - M: Hunter, F: Soda
47 - M: Andy, F: Aysha
48 - M: Kyle, F: Charity
49 - M: Steven, F: Savannah

For season 50, if I was picking based on who I want to win, I'd pick Christian and Genevieve. They're my top two, although I'd be really happy with several others, too. Cirie, Mike White, Angelina, Aubry, Coach, Emily, Dee... It'd be a crazy story if Jenna won.

However, I have one male who is standing out to me, and I can't believe I'm saying this... Coach. He's my male winner pick. Everyone on the cast seems to love him and want to work with him. I think he'll be underestimated in his strategy. He showed he can do it in South Pacific, but I don't think he'll lean on the religious/cult-like aspect with returnees. And when I look at the rest of the men, I don't see it. I could see Mike White, Christian, or even Kyle. But they all have big red flags, too. Coach is the only one that I don't see a red flag with.

The women get much harder. I could see so many of them winning. Cirie, Chrissy, Dee, Genevieve, Tiffany. I could see Emily. I could even see Angelina coming in and surprising everyone (which I would love). However, my female winner pick is... Aubry. She's a threat, but I'm not sure if she'll be as big of a target as the other women. She's coming back after a poor performance on EoE, and a quiet edit on Game Changers. She almost seems forgotten, when she was once considered one of the best to never win. I think players like Dee and Genevieve will be bigger targets. I think people could come after Chrissy, too. Aubry just seems like it's possible. This is more gut than anything.

So there it is... Coach and Aubry. I can't wait to see how wrong I'll be!

It's been so long that I don't recall why Coach was able to make it to a finale previously and lose.

He strikes me as someone who leans into his character, so I don't know if he can deliver the strategy I assume this case will want to see to a degree.

I never do winner picks because I don't generally pay attention to pre season stuff. I did listen to the RHAP tribe previews but only listened to the Jenna and Mike interviews.

The fan fiction ending is Cirie wins after making fire, after she failed to do so in Au v World. Jenna has potential, she described how she reduced her threat level pre-game and was the driver of the game in her last go around.

I'll give Jenna the winner pick because she sounded good in her interview and I'm biased because I didn't listen to the other ones.

It's a perfectly logical approach and I stand by it.

If anyone is suffering from Survivor withdrawal and cannot wait until Wednesday, Australian Survivor is back as well.

The theme this season is "Redemption" and it honestly feels like a huge stretch. There are some returning players so it makes sense for them, but for everyone else whatever personal story they bring is being labelled as redemption even if it makes zero sense.

They're also doing the have and have nots tribe that Survivor did way back in season 14. They only did it once and you'd think that'd be a hint not to do it again.

It's also the first season with a new host and the first time Survivor has been hosted by a previous player.

I can't say anything about the first episode enthralled me, but who am I to complain about additional Survivor.

And of course I'm out of town for two days during what is a monumental season premiere of Survivor 50.

Happy Survivor 50 Premiere Day! I'm so excited!

I also got my copy of Forged by Fire today. And yes, it is very heavily filled with pictures. I would be disappointed if I had actually purchased it to read, but I was more in it for Jeff's signature.

My list of Survivor autographs grows...

Tony Vlachos
Michele Fitzgerald
Natalie Anderson
Parvati Shallow
Stephen Fishbach

Great first episode -- and also horrible first episode with two HEAVY hitters going home. I know that's what its going to feel like most the season, but damn I'm so disappointed in Jenna's chaotic gameplay and losing Kyle due to injury.

He forged great relationships, but never really "owned up" to his game. Everyone in South Pacific saw through the "integrity" rouse and he never came out and said "I was playing a game of manipulation" (specifically regarding the religious side of it, and taking out Brandon in a weird way).

I think if he had worded that it was strategic, he would have EASILY won.
