Star Wars vs Aliens franchise

I would venture that the audience reactions to the post acquisition treatments of the Aliens/Predator franchise vs Star Wars should be something that they should study really hard. One has turned literally into a steaming pile, while the other has continued in onward march even a bit amplified. Needless to say I've just finished watching Predator: Badlands and was very entertained.

Hard to judge given the limited content on the Alien side but at least the movie felt similar to how they restarted SW.

Alien Romulus, while a better movie, feels very Force Awakens to me in that fans were so desperate for something "good" that they happily jumped on board but in reality were just given a repeat of a previous movie (or in this case, bits of all the movies) with a healthy dose of over the top fan service thrown in. Not that I think AR was bad or sunk entirely to the level of FA, but like FA, the more it sat with me, the less I liked it.

Alien Earth was meh. It looked and felt surprisingly low budget in many scenes and the story was laugh out loud bad at times. It did have its high points but overall was incredibly uneven.

Granted it did have a lot of generic backgrounds, but unlike star drek, they have at least attempted to plausibly flesh out the society that sent out the Nostromo. They told the origination of the Synths and explored a bit of the corporate run societies.

They definitely had some good ideas, some interesting ones that didn't quite pan out and a few I downright thought were bad or just didn't fit.

To continue the Star Wars analogy, I was hoping AE was going to be more like Andor and instead we got something closer to Book of Boba Fett. Okay, maybe that is a little too harsh, but you get what I mean.

Either way, I am still looking forward to seasons two and am hoping they will get some extra support since season one seemed to do well enough. A little more production quality and some better writing would go a long way without having to retool the whole thing.

Movie wise, I would love to see another one without so much of the fan service elements. AR was legit one half of an amazing Alien movie.

i found romulus to be a good boost for the franchise. earth wasn’t bad. i felt they tried to rush the ending. best character was the eyeball. badlands, along with prey, was a pleasant surprise. they both held my interest & were more entertaining than i thought they’d be.
not sure how mando will be or next years star fighter, so we’ll see how the franchise fares after that.

Dan Trachtenberg will hopefully continue in the Predator realm…. As those 2 plus Killer of Killers are the best in the franchise…. Yes including my hot take… the first Predator film
haven’t watched killer of killers yet. forgot about that one.

:) In AR, AE, Pred:Prey, and even Pred:Bad they didn't introduce anything major that contravenes what has been seen before. They took existing elements and wove stories that included that lore.
