Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I'm trying to remember what movie ads I saw last night. I didn't tune into the pregame, so missed the Hoppers one.

I think during the game there was:
Minions
The Mandalorian and Grogu
Project Hail Mary
The Adventures of Cliff Booth
(which I don't think actually named the movie in the ad)
Super Mario Galaxy
Disclosure Day
(the new Spielberg)

True, but they were 4 teasers before a movie. Just feels like this would be the biggest stage, and especially for a super hero movie. Feels perfect for at least a Spiderman trailer, but I'd think even another Doomsday teaser. I can't imagine they worried those would take away from the Star Wars spotlight.

And yeah, Olympics are going on, but I don't think you have any given day/timeframe with nearly the number of viewers you have during the Super Bowl. And you don't have commercials all going at the same time either as I would imagine different countries show different events, meaning they break at different times. Maybe Doomsday rolls out for the World Cup, but that's too late for their other big releases. I don't know, like I said, a bit surprising to me. It's very possible they don't think they would see the benefit for whatever reason in spending the time/money on the Super Bowl, I was just surprised.
In the US SB might get more viewers, but worldwide Olympics gets way more viewers than SB by far, plus its spaced out over two weeks compared to a single day, so more opportunity to catch a commercial with a trailer compared to a single spot in SB.

Like I mentioned given how international box office is way more important these days compared to the US market (which is down or flat as discussed many times here) it makes more sense to play to a global audience rather than the US. So if I'm marketing for a global audience I go to the Olympics rather than the Super Bowl.

Plus then we have to think of "over exposure". With four teasers being just released in the last couple months they may have thought they want to give time to let that sink in before releasing a brand new trailer for Doomsday.

Especially to any movies that a trailer had not already been released…. I feel like in the past there were always a few movies that the first footage was shown during the Super Bowl… I don’t know if we got any… perhaps Minions…. But like was already mentioned the Super Bowl aired on NBC
Exactly, none were new that I recall except the Minions tease, which again is unusual during a SB. This year just lacked for all trailers, first time in a long time. And I suspect its because of the Olympics as I mentioned.

Has everyone recovered from the holiday Bowl weekend?!? More importantly who the heck scheduled the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on a Super Bowl Weekend? Bonehead scheduling move there, but it may due to some Norwegian bureaucrat who has no idea what the Super Bowl is and just wanted to get the luge competition going. 🤔

Box office for this past weekend's Top 10 is out. No big changes or news, really. Nothing major was going to be released or happen on this holiday weekend anyway. Burbank's Send Help stayed in the top spot, but the numbers there are still so modest that it likely won't break even with its $40 Million production budget, barring some bizarrely strong second wind and an unexpectedly long theatrical run. The overseas box office for Send Help is very weak, at just $18 Million.

Zootopia 2, though, my goodness! Still the only family movie out there, and still chugging along. 😲

Other way around, NFL set the scheduled for Super Bowl 60 in February 2025 (following the conclusion of Super Bowl 59) after the Olympic Committee had already announced the schedule for the 2026 Winter Olympics in March 2024. It could have been scheduled next weekend, like Super Bowl in 2027 is February 14th, but they decided to go up against the Olympics, likely because NBC is broadcasting both.

Superbowl has been for a while (since 2022) and will continue to be on a "second Sunday in February" schedule.

Feb 8 this year, 2026, is a 2nd Sunday.

Feb 14 in 2027 is a 2nd Sunday.

And the SB in 2028 is already scheduled to be Feb 13, which is a 2nd Sunday.

Oh, really?! Okay. Still seems like a mistake though; everyone I knew was talking about the Super Bowl this weekend, not the Olympics. And we have a lot more retired California expats here than we do Seattle expats.

Although, I will say, one Olympic topic that "trended" at Sunday's Super Bowl party was pictures of those gorgeous, creamy wool uniforms that Ralph Lauren created for Team USA. Wow! 😍 I had half a mind to order one of those beautiful toggle coats, until I saw the price tag.

The Disneyland CM's in Fantasyland used to wear one similar, but in heather green and grey, and made of polyester instead of wool.

But then, because I'm not on the cusp of Social Media, by the time I had clued in on it via friends Sunday afternoon it had already completely sold out, even at $2,000 a pop. Ralph Lauren is a very, very smart man. 🤣

Not to mention that this isn't the first time that the SB and Winter Olympics have fallen on the same weekend, 2022 also saw this happen. Which if you guessed it, was also both broadcast by NBC.

So this really seems more like an Comcast thing to have them both scheduled at the same time so they can have all eyeballs for all sports all weekend. And if I was to guess, since the 2030 SB and 2030 Winter Olympics will both be broadcast by NBC, that yet again both will fall on the same weekend.

Ah, that helps explain it. It's sort of a trick of the calendar those wily Romans set up.

In my dusty memory banks, I remember the Super Bowl being on the first Sunday in February for a long time. And even in late January at times. But I may be wrong, and the memory banks had some dip spilled on them once the party got rolling.

As I just mentioned this isn't the first time this happened with both the Super Bowl and Olympics going at the same time, it happened back in 2022 as well.

So this seems intentional, and likely at the behest of the broadcast overloads at Comcast for NBC.

Yes. It had been last Sunday in January, and then first Sunday in February.

Up until the early 2000s it used to always be in January. Many changes including going to the 17 game season (soon likely to be 18 game season) pushed it into February.

I love how whenever Burbank doesn't really have much going on in the box office, this thread devolves into current pop culture. It's fun!

As for me and the Super Bowl, I'm just there for the party and the food and the open bar and the gossip, as per usual. But if they can't bring back Up With People, they could at least bring back Carol Channing as the halftime show. Some sort of pop culture nonsense people would actually watch. 🤣

But if you held my hand in the cold keg water of the 3rd quarter long enough, I'd probably still vote for Up With People.

Other than the fact that no one outside a very small percentage of the population even know who they are in 2026, and the fact that Up With People is not as large an organization anymore and Carol died in 2019, the modern audience doesn’t listen to such stuff anymore and it wouldn’t be consider “pop culture” in 2026 as it would be seen as outdated and out of touch.

The half time show with Bad Bunny the initial numbers are 135M viewers, which broke the previous record so it was a success by all measures. So that is current pop culture nonsense as you call it that people actually watched.

YES!!!!! Who did that stupid thing? I'm just glad I have the ability to record one and watch it later!. Terrible planning, lol

Opening ceremonies aired twice on Friday, once live and another during the main broadcast. Super Bowl main ceremony and game started after live Olympic events took place on Sunday. Not really that much of a conflict to consume most of it without missing anything.

Probably won’t have the same happen in 2030 with the NFL probably going to 18 games by then.
