Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Andrew C

You know what's funny?
Well of course they have go to on the offensive given what they’ve spent and who is looking over their shoulder.
Given that its opening weekend is the highest for a documentary in a decade, that says a lot about how docs do in theaters in general. I watch a lot of docs but unless it’s like some epic wildlife or space one, I would never see one in theaters. And I’m not really the target audience for this one anyways. lol.

Documentaries don’t typically cost $40M + marketing either.

So I wouldn’t put any credence into how this performed in relation to documentaries box office potential.

Amazon can spin this any way they want….but if That movie was a Disney movie people here would be screaming flop….this film has a very niche audience…once they see it….it’s appeal diminishes….a 40 Million spend on a documentary is foolish no matter the subject material

Speaking of Disney… looks like their first film out the gate in 2026 has a real chance at turning a profit

The $40 million doesn’t include production costs either. The $40 million is just what they paid Melania’s company for the rights to make a documentary. I’m sure most Amazon productions aren’t getting a sign-off from the CEO, but something tells me the higher ups were involved with this one.

Gotta say I'm surprised how little Disney went into the Super Bowl this year. They have so many big films coming out this year, I figured they would put out a few more. I thought for sure there would be a Doomsday one where they run it similar to the other 4, but this time highlighting Dr. Doom (I know it was announced a bit before they were not, but up until then). But even still, Spiderman is 6 months away, and then you have like Toy Story and Moana coming before that.

There was some Universal stuff of course...being on NBC..

Just Mando.

True, but I suspect that the $40M covered production costs partially if not fully. This is already the highest budget documentary, I can't imagine it cost much more than that.

There weren't many new trailers played at all during Super Bowl this year as compared to previous years. And I suspect that more has to do with the fact we have the Olympics going on right now at the same time (funny enough also on NBC in the US), and given that the worldwide audience is much larger on Olympics than the Super Bowl audience, it would make more sense to have more new trailers played during the Olympics than Super Bowl, especially given how international is much larger at the box office these days than domestic.

Also given they already released 4 trailers and that its still 10 months away it probably didn't make sense to have yet another Doomsday trailer so close to the previous ones, we'll likely get a few more in the coming months with other Disney movies like Hoppers and Mando.

True, but they were 4 teasers before a movie. Just feels like this would be the biggest stage, and especially for a super hero movie. Feels perfect for at least a Spiderman trailer, but I'd think even another Doomsday teaser. I can't imagine they worried those would take away from the Star Wars spotlight.

And yeah, Olympics are going on, but I don't think you have any given day/timeframe with nearly the number of viewers you have during the Super Bowl. And you don't have commercials all going at the same time either as I would imagine different countries show different events, meaning they break at different times. Maybe Doomsday rolls out for the World Cup, but that's too late for their other big releases. I don't know, like I said, a bit surprising to me. It's very possible they don't think they would see the benefit for whatever reason in spending the time/money on the Super Bowl, I was just surprised.

Especially to any movies that a trailer had not already been released…. I feel like in the past there were always a few movies that the first footage was shown during the Super Bowl… I don’t know if we got any… perhaps Minions…. But like was already mentioned the Super Bowl aired on NBC

I'm trying to remember what movie ads I saw last night. I didn't tune into the pregame, so missed the Hoppers one.

I think during the game there was:
Minions
The Mandalorian and Grogu
Project Hail Mary
The Adventures of Cliff Booth
(which I don't think actually named the movie in the ad)
Super Mario Galaxy
Disclosure Day
(the new Spielberg)
