Here is my assumption as to why Monsters is closing so early and Avatar doesn't even have a date...

  1. Demo Monster Inc show building
  2. Build temporary transportation hub in the current Monsters Inc area
  3. Demo current transportation hub
  4. Build new transportation hub across the street and bridge
  5. Demo temporary transportation hub
  6. Build Avatar
Why not just utilize the current transportation hub until the new one is ready?

To me it seems counterproductive to make a new one that will last a year tops so that they could do...what exactly with the old one?!?

Because the bridge and new Harbor entrance area is going into the existing transportation hub. So they can't build the bridge if the existing transportation hub is still active. And you can't build the new transportation hub and make it active unless you have the bridge. So it has to all be done at the same time.

Now as for whether they use Monsters Inc for a temporary transportation hub, I doubt it. But Monsters Inc is not something that is sticking around much after it closes, too many other pieces rely on it closing and being demo'd.

Fair.

Apparently ART is also ceasing operations by the end of March, so that will inadvertedly make the situation a bit easier as well, presumably.

I don't know how much of the transportation hub was actually ART, but yeah it'll help things if its not in service with less traffic to worry about.
Of course there were the cast shuttles and there were a few hotels with their own grandfathered shuttles and perhaps some things I'm not aware of, but ART was responsible for a significant amount of the traffic for that hub.

The Toy Story busses are also ART busses.

I'd imagine that at least in the short term Disney takes over any ART route directly related to their operations, like TSL. And all the hotel and CM shuttles (there are many, I've taken a few of the hotel ones myself) would likely continue, even if rerouted during the EGW project.

And that all the other routes not covered by OCTA would just stop, as many of the ART routes either overlap with OCTA or are within a short walk to an OCTA stop.

Which makes any new Transportation Hub requirements probably a lot smaller, so a cost savings for Disney in the end.

There is a lot of construction/functionality that needs to be lost for the eastern gateway project.

I imagine it will looks something like this:

Temporary hub (Blue=construction, red=guest pathways)

Construction of avatar:

They need to maintain a transportation hub and a ground level entrance to DLR on the east side throughout this entire project.

I don’t know if this will happen with Monsters, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing what is the plan for existing transportation hub traffic if any in the coming weeks as things get started.

With ART shutting down, I'm not sure they'll need to use the entirety of the current Transportation hub anyway. Any hotel shuttles still grandfathered in can be rerouted to either Mickey and Friends (essentially using the setup they use for events like Grad Nites) or Toy Story, and they can shift down to only using the southernmost shuttle lane. That would free up the entire north side for construction.

Also don't forget about the CM shuttles.

And it would all depend on if foot traffic continues down the middle walkway or needs to get rerouted also. As I suspect if it gets rerouted its pushed into the existing TSL bus path or alternatively where Monsters is now.

They can also route the hotel and CM shuttles into the TSL bus path since they don't use both sides at the same time.
