News Disney World Faces Rare Hard Freeze - January 31 2026

If you're daring the frigid temperatures, and you're not from the North and already know what to do, here are some tips:
  • Footwear: of course, no sandals, nothing 'open.' Boots would be best, otherwise your thickest sneakers. Also, thick thigh-high socks.
  • Pants: If you have thermal full length underpants with a loose over-pants, that would be best. Otherwise a thick single layer like denim.
  • Torso: layers, layers, layers. Try out at home whether the layers will fit over each other. You should have a skin-hugging long sleeve shirt. Over that, a light pullover with long sleeves. Over that a thick winter coast. The layers are important for indoors, too, because, if you can't remove the layers while indoors, you'll be uncomfortably warm.
  • Head: your torso layers should ideally be hooded with a drawstring that clamps down the hood to the head. Otherwise a thick ski cap that ideally pulls down to be a full ski mask. Even if you're just going from building to building, you have to survive the frigid wind in between. Ski googles over the eyes helps your eyes from painfully drying out. Or, if you can manage to get your full ski mask over sunglasses, that will do... except maybe at night.
  • No weakest links. If you're travelling with others, the least prepared of your group will slow you down. Have a kid that refuses to wear all those layers? Well, gratz, you'll be spending the whole weekend in your hotel room. Have a ditzy relative who thinks they don't need a hat? They'll be ruining your time constantly complaining about the cold. Everyone in the group needs to be prepared.
  • Make sure everyone has their own backpack to stuff winter gear into and take out again as you go from attraction to attraction. It all won't fit into one family sack.
If you are from the North, don't think you're coming to Warm and Sunny Florida either. Pack as you would at home.

Adding to @MisterPenguin 's list:

Carry a lip balm in your pocket, reapply often. Two good ones: Aquaphor and Nivea.
Hate to be that guy, but...

These balms contain extra fragrances and ingredients which, even if aren't working at odds against the main balm ingredient, can lead to allergic reactions or simply be irritants.

Aquaphor is mostly petrolatum. So... go all the way and get a pure petrolatum balm...

WFTV just said that we may see snow at Disney... Which means I'll have snow at my house if we do.

Trying to convince myself I shouldn't go if we do get snow...

Here is what I am planning for the park days...

1. Jeans plus leggings underneath.
2. Saturday - Layers on top. Start with a long sleeve top. Add a sweatshirt. Add a zip up hoodie. Finish with a Hellie Hansen jacket. They carry these in the Norway pavilion. I lost a bunch of weight recently and actually need to go acquire at least one more since my regular one is now too big...I am currently wearing one from high school. I'm 30. That tells you how long they last (and how much weight I've lost... it's looser than it was in high school).
Sunday - tank top or T-shirt, super thick sweater (literally, this sweater makes me too hot on a normal day), sweatshirt, Helly Hansen, plus extra zip up hoodie.

Extra point: your jackets should have hoods. I have mid length, thick hair and will leave it down for extra protection. Also, don't go out with wet hair.
3. Gloves. I brought mine with me, but they sell them here.
4. I am going to pick up a scarf because, frankly, I need one anyway. I will have my hoods up and scarf to protect my face.
5. I cannot wear boots right now because I'm in an ankle brace. I'm going to wear sneakers even though they're super uncomfortable. I only own ankle socks, so I likely will double up. I guess fortunately, the brace provides protection for my right. Sketchers makes boots with arch support, which ordinarily is my go-to.

I also have asthma and will carry my portable nebulizer. I am currently using an ECV due to said ankle brace (foot surgery from September). I probably wouldn't be able to do the parks otherwise because walking plus cold weather is just...bad.

Note on that: batteries may run down faster. I had one in Maryland after my surgery for a while and did run it when it was below 32 outside, and it did run. Plan on more frequent charges. I plan on giving mine a 30 minute charge midday. Normally I don't bother because the resort ones generally last all day.

It's going to really cold in Tally. May break the January 1985 record.

You may have inadvertently helped me solve a years old mystery.

I've had (what I thought was) super sensitive lips for years. Like go outside, if it's under 50 degrees...boom, chapped. But nothing has ever seemed to work for them.

I also have bad allergies. Think, carrying an epi pen, allergic to life. It's always a fun surprise to find a new allergy. /s (surgical glue...that was a fun one...). I never thought to question if I was actually allergic to the lip balms...until you said it.

I've done some detective work, and my working theory is that it's beeswax. Mainly because I googled the allergy and the images that came up looked exactly like my "chapped" lips. I'm not allergic to bees (as far as I know; I'm not exactly testing it out...) but if you have pollen allergies, which I do, it's a possibility. I know it's in my lipstick, but it could be better refined. Adding to that theory, I've been using Sun Bum lip balm. Guess which is the one brand containing vegan wax? You got it. Unfortunately, it's not working super well (probably because it contains alcohol), and of course I forgot to pack it.

I went to the gift shop and picked up a bottle of aloe vera. I know I'm not allergic to it, and this bottle has no fragrance and no alcohol. Plan will be to apply it and then my lipstick on the cold days. Gift shop had no petroleum jelly. Face is going to be covered with a scarf. And then bring it up at my next allergist appointment.

Anyway, thank you for mentioning it because in spite of having all the allergies, it just never occurred to me that I was having an allergic reaction.

Toyko and Paris have snow days, wonder what their cold weather guidelines are? Walking in the snow must be difficult. Maintenance staff must be shoving all day and night.

Coming from Ohio and Cedar Point, there may be delayed openings for Everest and the Universal coasters due to the temps and any wind.

That said, I'd rather be at the parks in this cold than the Orlando summer heat.
