I don't think you are in tune with this...

You missed entire offshoots like Conan, Jon Stewart. Or even Bill Mahr in other demos, etc.

Like much of broadcast TV - The format has been assaulted by the shift away from TV as the main consumption feed and linear broadcasting. It's not that they are unfunny - it's that much of the show's core value can be consumed in 30-90 second clips and people don't need the network TV footprint for exposure. Why watch 60mins 3-5 times a week when you can watch the key funny moments spoon fed to you by an algorithm without all the fluff?

The main stay of the format for the last 30+ years has been interviews and monologues. Both of which have been lapped by nimbler, more prolific formats like podcasts, and video sharing sites. That's the real killer of these formats.. that everyone under 60 isn't looking only to their TV anymore.
I disagree. I think I am in tune just fine. I think the entertainment industry continues to attempt to shift blame like you have said here. "Oh, it's being driven by streaming, etc. etc." No, it really isn't. It's that most of what's being produced today is just crap.

You really believe people are flocking to short form content and others because they are fleeing crap content?? Instead of people really getting hooked on the newer formats? Sorry dude... literally the biggest growth segments have proven you wrong. People are walking away from the old stuff because they simply don't feel they need it anymore.. while younger generations never went there to start.

No, I think the two things are independent of one another. I think people are adopting short-form content as a new form of entertainment that appeals to them, separate from their view of traditional long-form content.

I think people are fleeing long-form content because it is largely garbage, separate from their interest in short-form content.

Let's take the two biggest sci-fi franchises in history, Star Wars and Star Trek. Both are deeply struggling right now to get fans interested in their new productions. I don't believe for one minute that's because they are not YouTube shorts or Instagram reels. It's because most -- not all, but most -- of what they are turning out is garbage. And I am 100% confident that if they were to suddenly come out with a new movie that was of the quality of The Empire Strikes Back or The Wrath of Khan, the audiences would be there. In spite of their love of short-form media.

Unfortunately, I don't think either Disney or Paramount, nor most of Hollywood, have learned this lesson yet.

Um, you do realize garbage content in long form has always been there right? And that about 99.9997% of all short form content is garbage right? So that right there kinda blows your argument out of the water that people avoid long form content only because its now garbage. If the idea was to avoid garbage then short form content would be the LAST thing that people would flock to watch.

People are flocking to short form content because attention spans have gotten smaller and the increased need for instant gratification, plain and simple. There is still a lot of good content out there in long form just as there always has been, its just that it can't be consumed in 30-90 second easy to digest chunks where you get a quick dopamine hit by being part of the latest viral trend.

Setting aside late night for a second. If long form content has never been worse, what exactly was the peak TV trend about?

We’ve had a pullback for sure, but there is still way better long form dramatic content in the aggregate today than there was a couple decades ago. Sitcoms are certainly debatable and late night.
