Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

We've had a rough start to 2026. My mother-in-law passed away yesterday morning. She's been having episodes for the last year when she wakes up, and she basically passes out. Her blood sugar sky rockets, her oxygen level plummets, and her blood-pressure goes through the roof. They rush her to the hospital and get her on oxygen and she'd stabilize. But they couldn't get her stabilized yesterday and she didn't make it.

ospital. After doing some tests, they discovered he has the flu and pneumonia. They have him on oxygen and antibiotics, but they admitted him for at least tonight.

So we're trying to juggle funeral plans with hospital visits. Thank goodness my employer was amazing and worked it out so that I don't have to work until Saturday. The funeral is Friday. So I have the whole week to get everything done.
That is terrible, sorry your family has to deal with all that. All those symptoms sound exactly like Sepsis. I had Sepsis and was lucky because it was around 1am I had a pain in my side (turned out to be a kidney stone) and headed for the hospital which was about 14 miles away. Halfway there I started to feel cold even though it was July in NC and in the eighty degree range, my heart rate accelerated and my body began to shake uncontrollably. The worst part was that I was driving myself there. All I could do was keep going because I felt if I stopped I was going to die. When I got to the ER I walked in and was immediate grabbed by the arms and basically quickly dragged into the examination room. They didn't even take the time to ask my name. They identified my problem as I was staggering through the doorway and started intravenous antibiotics immediately.

After they stopped yelling at me for driving myself there, they told me that if I hadn't already been on my way they didn't think I would still be alive. It is amazing how quick Sepsis can come on, no warning just wham.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make this about me but it seems I did. My condolences to your family and understand what that all feels like. Stay strong.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like your FIL is in the best place for him right now.

I don’t know how many of y’all out there have investments, but I usually check on mine about once a quarter, or so. I try not to get obsessed or overreact to fluctuations in the markets.
I’ll just say it pays to stay active in those markets, at least for us anyway.

For all the years I've been doing fantasy football and pick'ems, it's the first time I've ever won money in one of the leagues. I came in 4th place in a pick'ems league (out of 51), and I got $70! This is only my 3rd year in the pick'ems group.

I've never won anything in any of my fantasy leagues, and I've been doing that for probably 10ish years. :(

I've never been much of a gambler. Maybe a few bucks at a casino but didn't know when to quit. If I won big early on I would continue to play until I was broke. So I now have a new system. My grandson has no luck at all. He bets on teams and specific plays and never wins, so my plan is to find out what he is betting on and then betting on the other side. It can't fail. The only time I remember him winning was on one of the Super Bowl games when he was about 13 years old. I told him that I would take him to a movie if he was right. So I got to see my very first Star Wars Movie. Don't ask me which one it was but the time was somewhere around 2015. Might have even been earlier.

I wouldn't necessarily classify fantasy and pick'ems as gambling. I don't place bets. I just pay a small fee ($20-$30) along with the rest of the members. Then there's a payout to the top teams at the end of the season.

For fantasy football, I draft a team, and each player earns points based on their weekly stats. We go through a season and playoffs, and the top team(s) get a prize.

For pick'ems, I just pick who I think the winner of each game will be each week and assign a point value to each game based on how confident I am. The highest point-getters at the end get payouts.

I did two fantasy leagues and one pick'ems league this year. In the past I've only done one fantasy league and maybe a pick'ems league. I do it more for fun than to win money. But I pay less than $100 for all of them each season, and I get much more than that in entertainment out of it. If I win anything at the end, it's a bonus. Honestly, the joy of winning in fantasy is worth more than the money.

Thanks. We are wondering if MIL maybe got the same influenza that FIL has right now, and that that's what caused her death. Apparently there's an outbreak in the nursing home where they live(d). It would make sense that she caught it and had trouble breathing because of it. I guess at least she didn't have a long drawn out illness before she passed. It happened very quickly. And given that my FIL had the exact same symptoms, it would make sense that it was the same thing. We went to visit him yesterday and he said when it started, he thought he was going to die. He looked at DH and said "Just like Riet."

Fortunately, they were able to help him and he's doing much better now. He's still in the hospital, in an isolation ward. The door is kept closed and we have to wear face masks and use sanitizer in order to visit him, but it's a small price to pay. Right now, the goal is to get him well enough to be released in time for the funeral. But he apparently isn't in any pain anymore, and his breathing is easier, so that's good.

The weather is TERRIBLE though. It's been snowing for days....several cities are out of salt for the roads. Trains and buses are down. Neither of the kids could get to school today. E got as far as Arnhem Central Station and had to turn around and come back because both the trains AND the buses are down. She was able to take a bus on Monday. Yesterday she stayed home because there was a problem that caused all the trains from NS to be down, and she would have been late had she had to take a bus. But she tried to get there today, and everything is down. She couldn't even get a bus across town to go to the zoo where she could study in a nicer environment. So she got home, and in the last hour or so, it snowed a couple of inches, and she had to walk her bike in places where she couldn't even see where she was going, so couldn't bike. This is about as close to a blizzard as the Netherlands gets. She salted the walkway both front and back this morning before she left and when she got home, I still had to walk through a couple inches of snow to open the back port for her, and then I had to shovel and we resalted. We're out of salt now. And friday is unclear whether we will get dumped on with rain or snow. We'll get dumped on for sure, but whether it's rain or snow remains to be seen.....we're hoping people will still be able to make it to the funeral.

@JenniferS -- remember some years ago, we had discussions about your bagged milk up in Canada? I just read an informative article from the CBC about it, and thought others here might also find it interesting.

I love bagged milk!

1 - We get four litres of milk divided into three lighter bags. Much easier to lift. More control adding a few drops to my nightly tea, vs a big glub from a heavy jug.
2 - With the banning of plastic grocery bags, the outer bag still guarantees a steady supply of kitty litter bags!
