Splash was destroyed and replaced as another kill two birds thing, obviously social justice
Social Justice is such a generic term that it gets thrown around without really understanding what it is. I will admit I understand why Disney wanted to replace Splash and did not even necessarily think it was a bad idea in concept. What I will acknowledge also is Splash was deliberately designed to avoid dealing with the problematic aspects of the source film and the idea that there was this huge demand to replace it was overblown especially considering in the last 15 years of its existence anyone with an internet connection could easily realize it is based on SOTS. On the one hand it is guilt by association. If I felt that Disney could create something new to replace Splash that would have been in theme and actually an improvement, I would be singing its praises from the hilltops. The problem is TBA is not that and it shows. I actually tried to ignore the Splash threads from 2020 on prior to TBA's unveiling and I waited to give my final verdict until I saw the video of the finished attraction. Unfortunately, it is obviously not an improvement over its predecessor, and I do think in retrospect it would have been safer to do nothing ultimately if they couldn't come up with a decent replacement. I would not consider myself a Splash forever person though because of the political baggage that entails. The infighting at the top of the company didn't help either. I more formally outline my opinions here.

.and hopefully they will quietly fix the EPCOT mess in the next few years....
I know they won't under Iger but thankfully we only have one more year to worry about that barring he decides to return again which will likely not happen due to the fact that it would likely not be well-received. Plus, the man is in his 70s.

Careful…. You’ll have to provide 100% proof when you make a statement like that!

I’m joking of course…. I think it’s common knowledge that 7 dwarves was significantly cut way down from the original plans.
The fact that they even built it is kind of amazing considering they rarely change plans after they are announced and even then, they picked the cheapest route possible.

That's mostly because they gave up trying to keep a theme.
Why is the real question.... is it just because of the IP mandate that they cannot maintain a "Tomorrowland" theme? prior to THE MANDATE there were ideas about Tomorrowland revisions for WDW and Disneyland...some of them pretty interesting too... Is there no IP that Disney has created that is a correct fit for Tomorrowland? THe Tomorrowland movie was a bomb though many enjoyed it, Meet The Robinsons was not a hit either... What about all of Walt Disney's futurist cartoons created in the 50s and early 60s... The Worlds Fair "World Of THe Future" promo films about transportation (Used in the Rocket Rods Queue)...they are IP... Can Tomorrowland just be based on the Mid Century aesthetic of what Walt imagined the world of Tomorrow could be...
Now that they are adding Walt to the COP, it seems like "Walt Disney's Tomorrowland" could be it's own theme... Retro, Mid-Mod, lots of eye candy, a few new attractions....and of course a heavy dose of whimsy...which could and should keep it from being too dated. I love the idea of Tomorrowland living in a perpetual state of the time period in which it was originally conceived... Bring back the Gull-Wing waterwalls!

it certainly seemed to be inching towards that direction...the latest F4 movie may have helped too.

In 1971, it's architecture was meant to be "serious."

But now, it can be argued that, because of the passage of more than a half century & because most of the Mid-Century-Modern has since been bulldozed elsewhere, Tomorrowland's relatively-recent-leaning back into the 1971 motif can now be "whimsical" even "timeless."

Just keep those waterfalls "off" on the token cold days! I'm glad it looks like Tokyo is keeping theirs! I hope to see them one day.

I would love to see the waterfalls come back but this will probably never happen because they would be adding something that requires maintenance that does not make money.

In today’s Disney, for every change they make, it must be considered, “Will it make money?”

In today’s Disney I think there will never again be theming for the sake of theming.

Any and all theming must be tied to making money in some way, be it selling alcohol or selling LLs.

LLs and alcohol being the number 1 and 2 highest margin products they sell today.

I think there was a time Disney cared about theming and valued theming as it enhanced the guest experience, but those days are gone now and as many have told me in these boards, Disney is a business and business is business.

I always viewed the relatively smaller/recent 1971 replacements of the steampunk elements were both their recognition that steampunk was no longer vogue, and for throwing those like me a bone.

When they originally installed the steampunk elements they were not in vogue either...the Steam Punk craze seemed to happen years later and then has faded back into obscurity again...Though I feel like Steampunk is pretty timeless... The Timekeeper show could have been had there been updated adventures, holiday overlays....It was a very fun show and a great use of the technology...
Looks like Tokyo is going to have the next great Tomorrowland, though I don't really love that aesthetic thay are doing with their Space Mountain... We will all see...I think they have quite a while to go before it opens...

I so wish I didn't agree with this.

Then what is it? It doesn't fit in Frontierland, not even close.
Quoting over here -

While I agree cars doesn’t fit Frontierland - Disney thinks it does. Piston Peak is part of the “re-imagining of Frontierland”

Part of the appeal of the lands of the castle parks is the timelines - Frontierland of the past is more fun to travel in vs. National park of the present.
