A valet employee assigned to a Walt Disney World Resort was recently arrested for allegedly finding a guest's checkbook and attempting to cash in, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Mason Reid Henrichsen, who worked as a valet at Disney World's Animal Kingdom Villages, was arrested and booked into jail under suspicion of grand theft by fraud and forgery of a check, the arrest affidavit said.

The backstory:
According to the arrest report, a woman called the Orange County Sheriff's Office on Dec. 3 after her bank alerted her to four suspicious transactions, where someone had written four checks attempting to withdraw money from her account.

The four checks varied in amounts between $98 and $670, totaling $1,248, the report said.

The woman said the checks were written to someone named Michael Henrichsen, someone she did not know, the report said. Detectives determined that there was someone by that name who worked as a valet at the hotel.

That person was not a direct Walt Disney World employee, but worked for the valet company, Towne Park, that's contracted with Disney.

Detectives talked with Henrichsen who said he found a blank check in the parking lot and "decided to write it out to himself for $88." He said the check appeared to be a business check.

He then deposited the check via an ATM at a bank near Disney Springs, he said, according to the report. He said he attempted to decline the transactions and that no money was deposited.

The woman told OCSO that she was visiting from Ohio and arrived at Disney's Kidani Village on Nov. 29. She did not notice any forced break-in to her vehicle, but did notice that her checkbook was missing, the report said.

Henrichsen was arrested and booked into jail. OCSO said it was going to forward the case on to its Economic Crimes division.

What they're saying:

Disney deferred comment to the third-party business. Towne Park released a statement to FOX 35 on Friday.

"We are aware of the situation, and the actions of this individual are not consistent with our business conduct policy or values. We are cooperating with authorities, launched an internal investigation, and this individual is no longer employed by the company. Because this is an active matter, we cannot comment further."

Of course, stealing is absolutely unacceptable, and no one "deserves" it, but I'm wondering who keeps a checkbook in their car? I do still have a checkbook but maybe write a handful of checks a year ... definitely not something I carry with me.

There are parts of the country where it's not uncommon to find places that accept cash and checks but not card, it's a nice backup that lets you avoid the alternative of keeping large amounts of cash in the car. Then if you drive to Disney it comes along because you already have it in the car.

Growing up (and I graduated HS a decade ago), they taught us to write cheques in school! And even then it was useless!

For years I've operated my business by only accepting cash or checks for payments. I have signs up and notify new customers of my policy in advance so there is no issue. The majority of my customers pay in cash. There is an ATM at a store nearby if someone needs to use their cards to get cash if they show up without a check or cash on them.
I personally prefer to pay for my transactions with cash and DW does write a lot of checks for her purchases. Some problems with cards is that many people are overusing them and accumulating huge debt with high interest fees or having them get hacked. Also many people do not realize that the more cards you have on hand can work against you when applying for getting loans because your credit line counts against you as available cash you have access to.

Your business is missing out on a ton of money if you don't accept cards... Customers wanting to pay with their cards do not care, in all honesty, that you have personal opinions against their use - especially when cheque usage peaked 30 years ago!

We still write some checks, a handful a year.

But yeah, I agree with you.

During my concierge training, I was told "It's more likely you'll see someone ask you to pay in Reichsmarks than a cheque". We still learned about them, for sure, but apparently at most resorts the number of times they were used in a year could be counted on one hand. I have to assume the parks might get a bit more use at some of the restaurants, but I have never seen anyone pay for their bills at one with a cheque either!

This is simply not true. While having a large number of recent hard inquiries can temporarily hurt your credit, having a good ratio of available credit to the balance you are carrying improves your chances of getting a loan. For people who don’t carry a balance and pay their credit cards in full each month (the only way you should be using credit cards), having more and higher credit card limits improves their credit versus someone who has few or no revolving debt accounts.

Yep over here in the UK you wouldn't be able to find a store that accepts cheques for the last ten years. A few mail order places still take them and occasionally clubs for membership fees, but almost everywhere moved to card payment.
In London there are a significant number of cashless places now and the only place I go regularly that doesn't take card is the barber shop.

The old saying "they only lend money to those who don't need it" still holds true. Look responsible and they will score you higher

Nope. My business has always thrived ( other than during covid when we were considered by the state as being not essential) and is doing very well and having no customers turning away be cause of this. I give them excellent service and I actually have to turn people away at certain times of the year when I fill up.
So not taking cards is not an issue.

You’d turn me away, unless I happened to have cash on me. I’m not paying an ATM fee to buy whatever it is you’re selling.

But I also get annoyed at stores that are “card only” - my local coffee shop is like that. It doesn’t affect me, I always pay with card, but it annoys me all the same.

I do not sell items. I provide a service. Been in business 43 years, excellent reputation. If you had gone to one of my few my competitors and received the poor service they offer you might reconsider coming to me.
